Soldier (Longinus), From a Calvary, From The Soest Altarpiece. A viewing soldier, the arms are missing, turned upwards and three-quarters on the back is seen with the right leg forward on a ground, the rear part of which turns into a raised rocky wall and where a shown and an uneashed foot appears. It is wearing a turban and over and paltrok a harness, of which top and part on the back are held together by a belt with buckle and a layer around the hips injured sash; Further knee plates, hypse (legs in part renovated) and high boots.

Nenfro statue of a winged lion. Culture: Etruscan. Dimensions: H. 37 1/2 in. (95.3 cm); length 28 3/4 in. (73 cm); width at haunches 13 3/4 in. (35 cm). Date: ca. 550 B.C..Several statues of this type, made from nenfro, a kind of volcanic stone used extensively at Vulci, depict winged lions and sphinxes. These were set up to protect the entrances to subterranean chamber tombs covered by a tumulus (earthen mound). They often appear in pairs and represent the Etruscan response to a long tradition of guardian figures stretching back to ancient Egypt and the Near East. Carving from an Overmantel, c. 1675-1677. Grinling Gibbons (British, 1648-1721). Lindenwood; The arrangement of architectural elements within grand interior spaces in the late 1600s and early 1700s emphasized symmetry and height. Decorative elements such as elaborately carved mantels, mirrors, paintings, and applied wall decorations were often stacked to achieve a visual focal point at one or both ends of the room. This particular overmantel decoration once hung above the fireplace in the Green Drawing Room of the Earl of Essex at Cassiobury in Watford, near London. In 1823, the British painter William Henry Hunt (1790-1864) produced a watercolor of the drawing room which featured this overmantel decoration.Grinling Gibbons was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, of English parents. After training there as an artist, he came to England in the 1660s and soon began to work as a sculptor of interior ornament, particularly in wood. Figure imprisoned by a restraint 332-30 BC Ptolemaic Period A figure is depicted whose head and arms are held in a restraint, like a pillory except that the restraint is not fixed. The cast is disfigured by cracks and the surface is worn, so that it is difficult to see the face. The head appears particularly heavy, and parallels suggest the man may have worn long hair and a beard. The figure is nude, and its belly protrudes. On the reverse may be seen four square depressions, two at the top of the back and two more just below those, whose purpose is not clear.The figure fits appears to belong in a group of small Hellenistic bronzes depicting dwarves in a pillory.. Grave Guardian Beast (Zhenmu Shou) 400 BCE-201 BCE China. Antlered creatures with long, protruding tongues are the most distinctive burial gifts that have been discovered in Chu tombs. ìAntler and tongueî figures may have been used in shamanistic rituals or may represent local deities. Typically centered at the head of the coffin, perhaps to protect the deceased from evil, such grotesque images assume a variety of forms with single or double heads. The painted scrollwork on this example is unusually well preserved.. Wood with polychrome pigments and lacquer horns .

The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Vase fragment depicting Berenike II 246 B.C.-221 B.C. Ptolemaic Period Ptolemaic oinochoai (wine-jugs) with portraits of the queens were libation vessels associated with the royal cult, and surely also emphasized the identification of Ptolemaic queens with the Egyptian goddess Isis. There are over 250 attested by fragments, 90 percent of them from Alexandria, the remainder from other sites in Egypt and distributed about the Mediterranean, especially those sites connected with the Ptolemies. The complete oinochoai (wine-jugs) were vessels about 30 cm in height. The vessels might have been distributed or purchased for use at festivals connected with the royal family, and also had domestic and funerary uses since a number of examples were found in domestic areas and cemeteries of Alexandria. Adoption of faience as the material for this Ptolemaic ritual vessel is an acknowledgement of its symbolic stature in Egyptian culture. Figure, c. 1900, 20-1/4 x 9-1/2 x 9-3/8 in. (51.4 x 24.1 x 23.8 cm), Wood, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 19th-20th century, Luba artists most frequently carved female figures. Women held a strong position in Luba society and performed a variety of social, spiritual and political roles. They were associated with sacred ceremonies and the ancestors and were believed to have protective and rejuvenative power. This sculpture, called a kabila or mboko, represents a kneeling woman with a vessel in her lap. Her high status is indicated by her elaborate coiffure and body scarification. Another carved woman's head adorns the lid of the vessel, reinforcing the importance of the feminine image. Kabila sculptures were used in divination ceremonies and were also associated with pregnant women and helping with childbirth.

Breastplate with Tassets ca. 1530 German, Augsburg Originally this armor would have included a matching helmet, arm defenses, and gauntlets. Although finely decorated, it was designed for practical use and probably belonged to a courtier serving in the armies of the Habsburg Empire. Its inventive and lively designs, particularly the winged cherub heads on the knees, embody the fruitful cooperation between armorers and etchers at the time. Early sixteenth-century armor with large-scale figural ornament is so rare that nothing closely comparable to the present example has appeared on the art market since the 1920s. Woman Putting on a Stocking 1895-1910 Edgar Degas French Since Degass surviving sculptures represent only a portion of his entire production, and since none are dated, it is difficult to establish a chronology. Those that still exist depict Degass favorite subjects. With the exception of a few sculpted heads, these include horses, dancers, and women—bathing or dressing—all caught in a fleeting moment. It has been suggested that, while Degas appears to have engaged adolescent models to pose for his earlier works, the later sculptures depict more mature and less slender sitters. In accordance with the artists expressive and summary late painting style, the surface here is rough and coarse. Bronze torso from an equestrian statue wearing a cuirass 2nd century B.C.-2nd century A.D. Greek or Roman The pose of this fragmentary torso suggests that the figure, who wears a short cape and an ornate cuirass of Hellenistic type, was originally riding a rearing horse, the left hand holding the reins while the right wielded a weapon. Dynamic equestrian bronze statues have a long tradition in Hellenistic and Roman art, stemming from Lysippos' famous group showing Alexander the Great on horseback, which commemorates the Macedonian leader's first major victory over the Persians at the Granikos River. The Romans sometimes adopted cuirasses of Hellenistic type. This fact, the widespread popularity of the equestrian statue as a public monument in antiquity, and the dearth of preserved examples hamper close dating of the torso. Date: ca. 1200-1220.The comical effect of the muttonchop whiskers, bulbous nose, enormous eyes, and open mouth of this grotesque head demonstrates the extreme expressions found in marginal sculpture. The head resembles others on corbels supporting the roof cornice of one of the principal churches in Chlons-sur-Marne. The bold features, part of a visual language specific to medieval buildings, are meant to be seen from a distance.
