Courtiers in a Rose Garden: A Lady and Two Gentlemen South Netherlandish ca. 1440-50 This work belongs to a series of tapestries designed to cover the walls of an entire room. Such sets were often referred to in medieval inventories as "rooms" ("chambres"). It is possible that this set was made for the French king Charles VII, whose colors were white, red, and green and one of whose emblems was the rose tree. A royal connection is certainly likely, for the tapestries are sumptuous, with metal threads not only in the clothing and jewelry worn by the fashionable courtiers and ladies, but also in the background leaves, buds, and open roses. Working from full-scale painted designs, the weavers produced tapestries like this by forcing the cross threads (weft) tightly into placeeach different-colored thread separatelyuntil all the undyed lengthwise threads (warp) were concealed. The design was conceived as an allegorical celebration of the golden age under the Medicis and under Leo X in particular. The theme and format of the set may have been conceived by Raphael (both of the putti in this tapestry derive from lost paintings by him), but the designs were executed by his pupils. In the Middle Ages the animal was best known for its supposed invincibility and for the therapeutic property of its horn. The Massacre at Jerusalem, from The Story of Titus and Vespasian Made 1650-1675 Brussels. This tapestry belongs to the eight-piece Story of Titus and Vespasian suite designed by Charles Poerson, who practiced the French academic-decorative manner that supplanted the dramatic and monumental Flemish High Baroque. Poerson clearly based the series on book two of Tacitusís The Jewish War (c. A.D. 75ñ79). Both Vespasian and his son Titus led the Roman troops during the First Jewish-Roman War (A.D. 66ñ73), a major rebellion by the Jews of Judaea against the Roman Empire. This tapestry depicts the massacre that took place at Jerusalem six months after the initial siege. The Arabian and Syrian soldiers who were part of Titusís army slaughtered the Jews who were attempting to flee, cutting open their victimsí bellies to get the gold coins some of them had swallowed before surrendering to the Romans. Titus can by seen on horseback, in the background on the right, rushing to stop the carnage.. Woo

In time, artists created decorative objects inspired by Chinese forms and motifs. This tapestry, one of a six-part series designed by the French painter François Boucher, captures the bustle of a European marketplace thinly disguised as a Chinese fair. Pagoda roofs, rickshaws, and Asian costumes, along with elephants and camels, help complete this illusion.
