The Adoration of the Magi Attributed to Miguel Gonzalez Mexican ca. 1695-1700 This unusual work is executed in a painted inlay technique known as enconchado, a term that derives from the Spanish word for shell (concha). Although it is indebted to imported Asian artworks inlaid with mother of pearl, the technique was ingeniously adapted by artists in Mexico City to local pictorial practices and objectives.The Adoration of the Magi originally formed part of a series of twelve panels dedicated to the life of the Virgin Mary. Outside a rustic stable, Mary receives three gift-bearing kings who pay homage to the holy child. The artist has used mother of pearl inlays to convey the resplendence of their garments, the gleam of precious metal, and the iridescence of feathers. The inlays are painted, colored with glazes and varnishes, and enriched by the delineation of details in shell gold. Crushed shells fragments are used to imitate the texture of stone masonry. Agamemnon musters the Greek troops at Aulis from the Story of Iphigenia” 1535-48 Design attributed to Pieter Coecke van Aelst A martial commander, richly clad in armor, stands amidst a bustling military encampment, perhaps preparing for departure, with shields, lances, chests and other rich objects piled in front of him. Despite the seeming cohesion of this composition, the design was apparently assembled from a group of existing figure patterns, recognizable from other successful narrative tapestry series designed by artists in the circle of Bernard van Orley and by Pieter Coecke van Aelst. In this instance, the narrative might be that of Iphigenia, the ill-fated daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, who was sacrificed by her father to appease the goddess Artemis and petition her to enable sailing weather for the Greek fleet waiting to embark from Aulis and invade Troy. Made for Nicolas and Guillemette Bouesseau, who married about 1485, this tapestry bears their family motto on the banner wrapped around the tree and their initials entwined in the lower corners. The youthful, outdoor play may reflect their motto, since Selon le temps can mean According to the season,” or According to the Weather”; the tapestry may have been part of an ensemble for the Bouesseau home representing the seasons or the ages of Man.Master of the accounts of the duke of Burgundy and then of King Louis XI of France, Nicolas Bouesseau was wealthy enough to order manuscripts and to endow a private chapel in the church of Notre-Dame at Dijon, all marked with the family motto or blazon..
