Decorative Drawing first half 15th century Ornamental brush drawings with lush foliage bearing a variety of human figures, animals, masks, heads, and often, though not here, mythological beasts first appeared in the Jalayrid court in the late fourteenth century. The genre flourished in the Timurid period in Herat when this drawing appears to have been made, as indicated by the figure style. The tradition later made its way to the Ottoman court in Istanbul where it continued with exceptional vigor. While all of them rely on a strongly calligraphic basis for the design, those of the Timurid period were executed with particular finesse.. Decorative Drawing 450385

The Gathering of Manna 1595-96 Designed by Alessandro Allori Italian Depicting the Children of Israel gathering manna (Exodus 16) and Moses holding the tablets on which he inscribed the Ten Commandments, this tapestry was one of three (of an intended set of five) made in 1595/96 for the cathedral of Como. It is a rare example of a private commission under taken by the Florence tapestry workshops, whose production was largely reserved for the Medici. According to contractual documents, the tapestries were to be of medium-quality weave and each would be woven in eight months (two were required for the cartoons). Combining multiple narrative, an all-over composition, and an elaborate sculptural border, the designs typify those that Allori produced for the Medici workshop during the last quarter of the sixteenth century. Date: ca. 1640-50.Kalamkari, a multistep process for dying textiles by applying each color with a stylus (kalam) or by using resists, is a specialty of the Deccan region of India. Although the region produced many types of dyed textiles for export to Europe and Southeast Asia between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, this hanging is one of a small group decorated with multiple figures, made only in the early 1600s. This particular hanging was once attached to several other similar panels, and was probably used as a backdrop for royal ceremonies. Courtiers in a Rose Garden: A Lady and Two Gentlemen ca. 1440-50 South Netherlandish This work belongs to a series of tapestries designed to cover the walls of an entire room. Such sets were often referred to in medieval inventories as "rooms" ("chambres"). It is possible that this set was made for the French king Charles VII, whose colors were white, red, and green and one of whose emblems was the rose tree. A royal connection is certainly likely, for the tapestries are sumptuous, with metal threads not only in the clothing and jewelry worn by the fashionable courtiers and ladies, but also in the background leaves, buds, and open roses. Working from full-scale painted designs, the weavers produced tapestries like this by forcing the cross threads (weft) tightly into placeeach different-colored thread separatelyuntil all the undyed lengthwise threads (warp) were concealed. The middle stalk originates from a knotted cloth by Rose (emblem of Gian Geleazzo Visconti). Lancet-shaped, yellow-wandering and ranging the leaves changed with large flowers, the parts of which are blue, red, yellow and white in color; O.A. rosette-shaped flowers with ribbon leaves formed as lightning bolts (perhaps radiant suns, also emblem from Visconti). Furthermore, numerous variations with knob-shaped and priem-shaped hearts. In between and somewhat symmetrically grouped wildlife such as, lynx, lion, griffin, deer, fox, tie, peacock, owl and falcons (). Yellow and green cured narrow edge shows on red league-motifs in yellow, blue and white. The edge is on the corners of dark blue.

New Kingdom Discovered in Room E of the palace of Amenhotep III at Malqata, this fragment was part of the border of the decorated mud plaster floor.
