The battle for the town of Eparges April 1914. after the initial advance into France had been halted, the Germans once again went on the offensive, capturing land south of Verdun, an area that would be known as the St. Miheil Salient. The Germans strongly fortified the Butte des Eparges to the east of the town of Eparges.

This illustration from early World War I has the caption: Germans, wearing gas masks, storming a British trench near Ypres in Belgium. Ypres was the site of several battles during the War. Its location placed it right on the route the Germans planned to take as they made their way into France from the north. At the start of the second battlel of Ypres, the Germans used poison gashence, the use of gas masks by the Germans.

World War I - British troops adavance on German African soldiers during the Battle of Loos was the largest British offensive mounted on the Western Front in 1915 during World War I. The first British use of poison gas occurred and the battle was the first mass engagement of New Army units. Prior to the British attack, about 140 long tons of chlorine gas was released, with mixed success; in places the gas was blown back onto British trenches. Due to the inefficiency of the contemporary gas masks, many soldiers removed them as they could not see through the fogged-up talc eyepieces or could barely breathe with them on.

On the rifle ranges of Bisley and elsewhere, a shot which misses the target is signalled by the waving of a flag to and fro above the trench, in which the market sits. With 'characteristic humour', British soldiers at the Front adopt the same means (with a shovel substituted for a flag) to notify the enemy of his errors in marksmanship. Kumwha Valley, Republic of Korea -- Spring 1952After North Korea invaded South Korea on 25 June 1950, United States armed forces fought to repel Communist aggression. President Harry Truman and his advisors had major concerns about mobilizing reserve forces because they did not want the conflict to escalate to World War III. Truman ultimately decided that it was a military necessity and authorized mobilization in 19 increments beginning in July 1950. Hundreds of Army and Air National Guard units were mobilized, including the 40th Infantry Division of the California Army National Guard. The "Sunshine Division" mustered into Federal service 1 September 1950 in California at Camp Cooke (later renamed Vandenberg Air Force Base). The 40th Division deployed to Japan in the spring of 1951 and trained there for months while senior Army commanders debated employing the division in Korea as a unit or as individual replacements. Eventually, in January l952, the 40th arrived in Korea and
