Key first half 14th century German The decoration of Gothic iron locks and keys was often elaborate and of the highest standard of workmanship. The motifs were frequently drawn from Gothic architecture, reproducing on a miniature scale complicated tracery patterns and even tiny statuettes. A number of these tiny locks were compound, with some of the mechanisms concealed from view, and required two or even three keys used in sequence to open them. It has been suggested that the greatly expanded use of locks on doors, or coffrets and other types of storage chests was a result of the increasing urbanization of life and the new emphasis on material wealth and private ownership which developed in the late Middle Ages.. Chisel on white

Staff of Amenhotep ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom Sometime in the early joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III, a twelve-year-old boy named Amenhotep was buried on the hillside below the tomb chapel of Hatshepsut's well-known official, Senenmut (36.3.252). Although still a child, Amenhotep was well provided for. On top of his wooden coffin lay a forked staff (shown here) and a necklace of lentoid faience beads (36.3.154). Beside the coffin were food offerings of bread and beer (36.3.161), and a variety of fruits including raisins, dates, dom palm nuts, sycamore figs, and a pomegranate. A beautiful stone shabti figure (see 19.3.206) had been laid next to the coffin. Its inscription identified it as a gift from Amenhotep's brother, Senu. This shabti is now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo.Inside Amenhotep's coffin were two bright blue faience armlets (36.3.155), sized for an adult rather than a child, and a pair of red leather sandals (36.3.159). Vertical flute, c. 1800, 24 5/16 x 1 1/8 in. (61.75 x 2.86 cm), Bamboo, China, 18th-19th century, The Chinese have used bamboo to create functional objects since the Stone Age. The material is inexpensive and extremely versatile. The Zhu bu, or Bamboo Treatise, from the third century describes how to use bamboo for food, the manufacture of paper, pipe stems, buckets, brush handles, medicine, and musical instruments. The excavated tomb of Marquis Yi of Zheng (433 BCE) yielded several wind instruments made of lacquered wood and bamboo. These included pan pipes, reed mouth-organs, and two transverse flutes. While much later in date, this bamboo flute is similar in size and structure to the one being played by the Eastern Han tomb figurine shown here. It is not certain when the bamboo flute was first used by the Chinese, but it was common throughout the Bronze Age and, by the Han dynasty, it seems to have gained popularity as an instrument for entertaining.
