Coal Miners- Everyday Life in a Midlands Colliery, England, UK, 1944 Miners at a colliery somewhere in the Midlands, leave the 'pit cage' at the end of their shift. The 'cage' is a lift which descends down to the coal face. According to the original caption, the shifts are supposed to last seven and a half hours, but the men don't work to a clock.
