Man in a Green Coat ca. 1779-85 Gilbert Stuart American This portrait seems to have been begun as a rectangle and then changed to an oval format. It is one of Stuarts most virtuosic paintings, clearly from his first years in London, but both its date and the identity of the sitter are unknown. The vague, brushy treatment of the background has raised the suggestion that the work is unfinished. Yet it seems rather to be inspired by Thomas Gainsborough, whose paintings the young American certainly saw and admired in England. Gainsborough also favored oval portraits and such light pastel colors as the pleasing green of the young sitters coat.. Man in a Green Coat. Benjamin Franklin, half-length portrait, standing, facing slightly left, he holds a book "Electric Expts", scientific instruments are to his left, and in the background lightning strikes a village. From a painting by Benjamin Wilson. Franklin sat for Wilson, who also experimented with electricity, shortly after his arrival in London. He worked in London as a foreign diplomat representing the Pennsylvania Assembly.

Ferdinand VII (1784-1833), When Prince of Asturias Goya Spanish The sixteen-year-old Prince of Asturias wears the Spanish Habsburg Order of the Golden Fleece, the French Bourbon Order of the Holy Spirit, and the sash of the Spanish Order of Charles III. Once viewed as a copy, the picture is now considered the original, full-scale oil sketch for Goyas famous group portrait of the family of King Charles IV (Museo del Prado, Madrid). Like the other surviving studies for that work, attention focused on the head while the bust and costume were left unfinished. Subsequently another artist gave it a finished appearance and painted the oval surround. The picture belonged the sitters widow and to the dukes of Montpensier.. Date: 1792.The sheet of paper in the sitter's hand reads: "Don Sebastián Martínez by his friend Goya 1792." Martínez was a famous collector of books, prints, and paintings. He held the position of chief treasurer of the Finance Committee of Cadiz, a flourishing harbor town linked by trade with England and France. This portrait was probably painted just before Goya contracted the illness that caused his deafness and affected him intermittently for the rest of his life.
