A DPAA investigation team searched for and surveyed several locations across the country, gathering key data in the process. Information from the JFA will be used to determine and prioritize future recovery missions. This was the agency's first investigation mission in the country in lieu of new COVID-19 guidelines. The last investigation took place in 2019. DPAAs mission is to achieve the fullest possible accounting for missing and unaccounted-for U.S. personnel to their families and our nation.

Firefighters with the Directorate of Emergency Services Fire Department conduct ice rescue training Jan. 11, 2023, at a frozen Big Sandy Lake on South Post at Fort McCoy, Wis. Several firefighters with the team took their turn getting in a suit, strapping an air tank and full-face mask, and diving into the depths of Big Sandy Lake under the ice on Fort McCoys South Post. The divers were covering depths of up to 15 feet or more completing several types of rescue scenarios under the guidance of fellow firefighters. Divers took turns going in and out of the same hole that was cut in the ice. Each diver was tethered with a connecting line that included a communications connection. This is an annual requirement for dive team members to maintain their abilities.

A day of unique Combat Water Survival and Swift Water Rescue Training was conducted in the waters of the Fox River in Oshkosh, Wis. by the Soldiers of Company A, 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team this Saturday, September 10. Virginia National Guard Soldiers trudged through high water and cut trees to clear a path for two rescue missions that transported seven adults and one child to safety at two locations on Cattail Road in the Mears, Va. area Oct. 30. The rescue mission took place two days after another high water transport required carrying a citizen who was unable to walk more than 200 yards through chest-high water. Virginia State Police had asked the Soldiers to conduct health and welfare checks at two locations they had not been able to reach. At the first location, the Soldiers had to cut through trees to enable their medium tactical truck access to the house where a family of five, including a young child, needed assistance to leave their house that was surrounded by high water. At the second location, Soldiers had to trudge through two miles of high water, cutting trees as they went, but unable to get their truck to the house where a husband and wife needed evacuation. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster visits the coastal areas of South Carolina most affected by Hurricane Ian aboard a South Carolina Army National Guard UH-60 helicopter assigned to 59th Aviation Troop Command, South Carolina, Oct. 1, 2022. The purpose of the flight was to allow Governor McMaster to assess the damage on the coast between the Blue River-North Myrtle Beach and Georgetown-Charleston areas, as well as to meet with local authorities and emergency responders. Hurricane Ian made landfall in the proximity of Georgetown, South Carolina, just after 2 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 30, 2022, as a category 1 hurricane.
