iss063e025381 (June 7, 2020) --- Tropical Storm Cristobal is pictured from the International Space Station as it was nearing southeastern Louisiana. The orbiting lab was just off the coast of West Palm Beach, Florida, when this photograph was taken.

ISS017-E-005599 (29 April 2008) --- Outflow obscures the definition of the eye and center of Tropical Cyclone Nargis, seen when the storm was at approximately 13.5 degrees north latitude and 86.2 degrees east longitude with maximum winds of 74.9 miles per hour. Photographed by a crew member aboard the International Space Station, the storm was moving east-northeast at 070 degrees at 4.6 miles per hour. This picture was made several days prior to impact at Burma.

Hurricane Elena as Seen from Space Shuttle Discovery

STS080-731-009 (19 Nov.-7 Dec. 1996) --- The space shuttle Columbia astronauts photographed this Southern Hemisphere cyclone named Daniella, as it gathered force off the east coast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Being in the Southern Hemisphere it spins clockwise, just the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere hurricanes and typhoons.

ISS017-E-005749 (30 April 2008) --- When this image was photographed by one of the crew members aboard the International Space Station, Tropical Cyclone Nargis was centered near a point located at 15.3 degrees north latitude and 88.2 degrees north longitude and moving northeast at 065 degrees at 8.1 miles per hour. The center was approximately 7 degrees southwest of Burma with sustained winds of 74.9 miles per hour, gusting to 92.2 miles per hour, forecast to strengthen. Maximum significant wave height was 27 feet.

ISS012-E-10110 (3 Dec. 2005) --- This view featuring the eye of Hurricane Epsilon in the Atlantic Ocean was photographed at 15:35:58 GMT on Dec. 3, 2005 by one of the crewmembers of Expedition 12 aboard the International Space Station. The orbital outpost was flying at an altitude of 190 nautical miles. Center point coordinates are 34.5 degrees north latitude and 44.4 degrees west longitude.

ISS028-E-034018 (27 Aug. 2011) --- Some seven hours after Hurricane Irenes initial landfall at Cape Hatteras, NC, one of the Expedition 28 crew members aboard the International Space Station photographed this image, one of a series following the hurricanes destructive path along the east coast.

This panoramic view of Hurricane Charley was photographed by the Expedition 9 crew aboard the International Space Station (ISS) on August 13, 2004, at a vantage point just north of Tampa, Florida. The small eye was not visible in this view, but the raised cloud tops near the center coincide roughly with the time that the storm began to rapidly strengthen. The category 2 hurricane was moving north-northwest at 18 mph packing winds of 105 mph. Crew Earth Observations record Earth surface changes over time, as well as more fleeting events such as storms, floods, fires, and volcanic eruptions.

The MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite flew over Typhoon Soudelor on Aug. 7, 2015, at 4 40 UTC (12 40 a.m. EDT) as it was approaching Taiwan.

ISS024-E-012946 (30 Aug. 2010) --- Hurricane Earl is featured in this Aug. 30 image photographed by an Expedition 24 crew member on the International Space Station.

ISS012-E-5284 (19 Oct. 2005) --- This image of Hurricane Wilma was taken at 8:24 a.m. CDT Wednesday, Oct. 19, by the crew aboard NASA's international space station as the complex flew 222 miles above the storm. At the time, Wilma was the strongest Atlantic hurricane in history, with winds near 175 miles per hour. The storm was located in the Caribbean Sea, 340 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico.

ISS008-E-19646 (27 March 2004) --- This image featuring Hurricane Catarina was taken by an Expedition 8 crewmember on the International Space Station (ISS). Until this past week only two tropical cyclones had ever been noted in the South Atlantic Basin, and no hurricanes. However, late last week, a circulation center well off the coast of southern Brazil developed tropical cyclone characteristics and continued to intensify as it moved westward. The system developed an eye and apparently reached hurricane strength on Friday, March 28, before eventually making landfall late on Saturday. The crew of the ISS was notified of the cyclone and acquired this excellent oblique photo of the storm just as it made landfall on the southern Brazilian state of Catarina (the storm has been unofficially dubbed Hurricane Catarina). Note the clockwise circulation of Southern Hemisphere cyclones, the well-defined banding features, and the eyewall of at least a Category 1 system. The coastline

Supertyphoon Yuri began development approximately 1000 miles east of the Philippine Islands. At the time this photo was taken, Yuri was about 1000 nautical miles in diameter and had estimated maximum sustained wind speeds of 145 mph, gusting to 170 mph. This oblique view shows the well formed eye of Yuri and the raised segment of clouds at the cusp of the eye indicating very high wind speeds within the vortex.

iss064e002148 (Oct. 28, 2020) --- Hurricane Zeta was pictured from the International Space Station as the category two storm churned in the Gulf of Mexico nearing Louisiana.

. iss069e090103 (Sept. 19, 2023) --- Category 1 Hurricane Nigel is pictured on a northeasterly track in the Atlantic Ocean as the International Space Station orbited 259 miles above. At left, is the Soyuz MS-23 crew ship docked to the Prichal docking module.

S94-E-5027 (9 July 1997)--- Hurricane Dolores located about 20 degrees southwest of the tip of the Baja Peninsula in the eastern Pacific supported winds of 90 knots with gust of 100 knots on July 9, 1997. The photograph was taken through overhead windows on the aft flight deck of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia. Notice the thunderstorms in the bands leading into the eye at lower levels and the lighter cirrus clouds coming from the outflow out of the eye at higher levels.

ISS011-E-12343 (3 September 2005) --- Typhoon Nabi is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 11 crewmember on the International Space Station, as it swirls in the Pacific Ocean, heading toward southern Korea and Japan. At the time this image was taken Typhoon Nabi was ~23N 133E with sustained winds ~100 knots, gusting to 120 knots.

S115-E-07153 (18 Sept. 2006) --- A high oblique view from the Space Shuttle Atlantis gives a good look of Hurricane Gordon. At the time the photo was taken, with a digital still camera equipped with a 28mm lens, the center of Gordon was near 37.5 north latitude and 46.4 west longitude moving west-northwest. The sustained winds were at 80 nautical miles per hour with gusts to 95 nautical miles per hour.

ISS009-E-25172 (26 September 2004) --- Hurricane Jeanne, as seen from the International Space Station at 17:46:59 GMT, September 26, 2004.

STS047-151-618 (19 Sept 1992) --- A large format Earth observation camera captured this scene of Hurricane Bonnie during the late phase of the mission. Bonnie was located about 500 miles from Bermuda near a point centered at 35.4 degrees north latitude and 56.8 degrees west longitude. The Linhof camera was aimed through one of Space Shuttle Endeavour's aft flight deck windows (note slight reflection at right). The crew members noticed the well defined eye in this hurricane, compared to an almost non-existent eye in the case of Hurricane Iniki, which was relatively broken up by the mission's beginning. Six NASA astronauts and a Japanese payload specialist conducted eight days of in-space research.

S115-E-07157 (18 Sept. 2006) --- A high oblique view from the Space Shuttle Atlantis gives a good look of Hurricane Gordon. At the time the photo was taken, with a digital still camera equipped with a 28mm lens, the center of Gordon was near 37.5 north latitude and 46.4 west longitude moving west-northwest. The sustained winds were at 80 nautical miles per hour with gusts to 95 nautical miles per hour.

iss053e007343 (Sept. 8, 2017) --- Hurricane Irma was pictured as a Category 4 storm between Cuba and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

ISS041-E-011814 (16 Sept. 2014) --- Though having been upgraded from a tropical storm to a Category 2 hurricane, the Atlantic-borne Edouard thus far has avoided land interests as it reached maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hout, churning in ocean waters several hundred miles southeast of Bermuda. The Expedition 41 crew members onboard the International Space Station photographed and distributed a series of images via station-to-ground downlinks and via social media. This photo was taken at 15 29 04 GMT on Sept. 16, 2014. Though it had well-defined eye at this juncture, the eye does not show clearly in this image, as it does in others.

NOAA's GOES-East satellite captured a visible image of the storm on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 1145 UTC (7:45 a.m. EDT) that showed it in the North Atlantic, blanketing eastern Canada and stretching east over open waters.

NASA image acquired August 10, 2010Tropical Storm Dianmu blew over the East China Sea in early August 2010, traveling slowly toward the Korean Peninsula. On August 10, 2010, the U.S. Navys Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that Dianmu had winds of 55 knots (100 kilometers per hour) with gusts up to 70 knots (130 kilometers per hour). JTWC stated that the storm was roughly 270 nautical miles (500 kilometers) south-southwest of Seoul. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Terra satellite captured this natural-color image on August 10. The storm, which sports a distinct eye, stretches primarily north-south, sending spiral clouds hundreds of kilometers southward over the East China Sea. Storm clouds skirt Chinas eastern coast. ISS017-E-015732 (9 Sept. 2008) --- Hurricane Ike covers more than half of Cuba in this image, photographed by the crew of ISS-17 aboard the International Space Station from a vantage point of 220 statute miles above Earth. The center of Ike was near 22.4 degrees north latitude and 82.4 degrees west longitude and moving 290 degrees at 11.7 miles per hour. Sustained winds were at 80.6 miles per hour, with gusts to 97.9 miles per hour and were forecast to strengthen as the eye moved back over the warm water in the gulf of Mexico.

. iss069e056910 (Aug. 13, 2023) --- Typhoon Khanun is pictured south of Nagoya, Japan, from the International Space Station as it orbited 259 miles above the Pacific Ocean.

ISS011-E-10257 (9 July 2005) --- This easterly-looking image from the International Space Station shows Hurricane Dennis after the storm had already crossed Cuba and was heading for the northern Gulf of Mexico. Dennis was a Category 3 storm, packing winds of 115 miles per hour, at the time of exposure and located approximately 385 miles southeast of Biloxi, Mississippi or 280 miles south of Panama City, Florida. The image was exposed at 22:07:26 (GMT), July 9, 2005. The storm's eye is just to the right of frame center. The black triangle in extreme lower right is part of the Space Station's window.

ISS040-E-007623 (5 June 2014) --- This cyclone spinning around in the southern Pacific was captured with a digital still camera by one of the Expedition 40 crew members aboard the International Space Station on June 5. Located at 51 degrees south latitude and 151.3 degrees west longitude, it is apparently not a major thrreat to land.

ISS029-E-005352 (16 Sept. 2011) -- One of the Expedition 29 crew members aboard the International Space Station, flying at an altitude of approximately 220 miles, took this night time picture showing Africa's Congo coast, clouds, airglow and Earth's terminator. Nadir coordinates are 5.32 degrees south latitude and 12.86 degrees east longitude.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument that flies aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured this image of Typhoon Usagi on Sept. 22 at 02:45 UTC/Sept. 21 at 10:45 p.m. EDT on its approach to a landfall in China.

ISS009-E-20890 (30 August 2004) --- This oblique view of the poorly defined eye of Hurricane Frances was taken Monday morning (12:13:41 GMT) by the crew of the International Space Station. The storm was a Category 3 hurricane and had been experiencing fluctuations in organization and strength during the previous day.

Typhoon Soudelor photographed from the International Space Station on Aug. 5, 2015 while the storm was traveling in the western Pacific. The Soyuz TMA-17M (bottom left) and the Progress 60 (top left) cargo craft are visible. Typhoon Soudelor, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Hanna, was the second most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2015 as well as the strongest tropical cyclone of the 2015 Pacific typhoon season. Soudelor had severe impacts in the Northern Mariana Islands, Taiwan, and eastern China, resulting in 40 confirmed fatalities

ISS043E078169 (03/31/2015) --- This close up of the huge Typhoon Maysak "eye" of the category 5 (hurricane status on the Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale) was captured by astronauts on board the International Space Station Mar. 31, 2015. The massive Typhoon is headed toward the Philippines and expected to land on the upcoming Easter weekend. The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellites, both co-managed by NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, captured rainfall and cloud data that revealed very heavy rainfall and high thunderstorms in the still strengthening storm.

ISS009-E-17734 (11 August 2004) --- Tropical Storm Bonnie in the Gulf of Mexico. A crew member's digital still camera onboard the International Space Station captured this image Wednesday morning.

This visible image of Tropical Storm Leslie and Hurricane Michael was taken by the MODIS instrument aboard both NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites on Sept. 9 at 12:50 p.m. EDT.

NASA image acquired January 26,02011 Tropical Cyclone Wilma raged over the Pacific Ocean in late January 2011. At 8 00 p.m. New Caledonia time (9 00 UTC) on January 26, the U.S. Navys Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that Wilma was located some 555 nautical miles (1,030 kilometers) east of Noumea, New Caledonia. Wilma packed maximum sustained winds of 115 knots (215 kilometers per hour) with gusts up to 140 knots (260 kilometers per hour). The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image at 12 45 p.m. New Caledonia time (1 45 UTC) on January 26, 2011. Wilma has a tightly coiled configuration and a well-defined eye. The storm hovers over the Pacific Ocean just south of Fiji. According to the JTWC, Wilma would remain strong for a day or so, then would being to gradually weaken, thanks to greater vertical wind shear and lower sea surface temperatures. ISS040-E-045632 (7 July 2014) --- The International Space Station passed directly over the eye of Typhoon Neoguri on July 7, and Expedition 40 Flight Engineer Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency captured its startling dimensions in a series of still photos. In a tweet, Gerst marveled that even with a fish-eye lens (which was used on some more distant angles other than this almost nadir one), he couldn't capture the whole storm. A 70mm focal length was used for a small sequence of close-up eye pictures such as this one. The picture was taken at 21:53:25 GMT on July 7, 2014.

Hurricane Ian is pictured from the International Space Station as it orbited 258 miles above the Caribbean Sea east of Belize. At the time of this photograph, Ian was just south of Cuba gaining strength and heading toward Florida. In the foreground (from left), are the Soyuz MS-22 crew ship, docked to the Rassvet module, and the Soyuz MS-21 crew ship, docked to the Prichal module.

ISS009-E-22823 (15 September 2004) -- Hurricane Ivan fills the northern Gulf of Mexico in this photo taken by astronaut Edward M. (Mike) Fincke as the storm approached landfall on the Alabama coast Wednesday afternoon (21:59:36 GMT, Sept. 15). Ivan was reported to have sustained winds of 135 mph. This photo was taken from an altitude of about 230 miles. Fincke, the NASA ISS Science Officer, and Commander Gennady Padalka are nearing the end of a six-month mission aboard the research outpost.

Hurricane Gonzalo has made the jump to major hurricane status and on Oct. 15 was a Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. NOAA's GOES-East satellite provided imagery of the storm. According to the National Hurricane Center, Gonzalo is the first category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic basin since Ophelia in 2011. NOAA's GOES-East satellite provides visible and infrared images of weather from its orbit in a fixed position over the Earth. On Oct. 15 at 15 15 UTC (11 15 a.m. EDT) GOES saw Gonzalo had tightly wrapped bands of thunderstorms spiraling into the center of its circulation. The eye of the storm was obscured by high clouds in the image. NOAA aircraft data and microwave images clearly show concentric eyewalls, with the inner radius of maximum winds now only about 4-5 nautical miles from the center. ISS009-E-22157 (11 September 2004) ---- This image of Hurricane Ivan, one of the strongest hurricanes on record, was taken Saturday from an altitude of about 230 miles by Astronaut Edward M. (Mike) Fincke, NASA ISS science officer and flight engineer, looking out the window of the International Space Station. At the time, Ivan was in the western Caribbean Sea and reported to have winds of 160 mph

Hurricane Cristobal is located west of Bermuda still holding to hurricane strength with a small window of opportunity for strengthening further before it moves to higher latitudes and over cooler waters in a couple of days. Currently, the satellite presentation resembles a subtropical cyclone with weak convection which is not concentrated near the center. Cristobal slowed down earlier this morning, but it has resumed a northward motion at 10 knots. This image was taken by GOES East at 1145Z on August 27, 2014. Caption

ISS040-E-042784 (7 July 2014) --- One of the Expedition 40 crew members aboard the International Space Station photographed a series of images of Typhoon Neoguri in the vicinity of Japan on July 7, 2014. This oblique 10.5 focal length view showing the eye on left side of the visible area was photographed at 21:55:38 GMT. Two docked Russian spacecraft are visible in upper left and lower left.

SL4-136-3388 (2 Dec. 1973) --- This excellent view of a South Pacific storm was photographed from the Skylab space station in Earth orbit by one of the Skylab 4 crewmen. The camera used was a hand-held 70mm Hasselblad, with SO-368 medium-speed Ektachrome film. This photograph of a low pressure area and associated frontal activity was taken for studying the development of such storm systems. The low sun angle enhances the relief, giving much of the picture a three-dimensional appearance. The good definition of the clouds with the cumulonimbus (thunderstorm clouds) penetrating the cirrus cloud layer makes this an interesting photograph to study. This storm, located east of New Zealand at 170 degrees west longitude and 50 degrees south latitude, is not and never became a typhoon. However, in some ways it may look similar.

ISS031-E-146364 (27 June 2012) --- One of the Expedition 31 crew members working in the Cupola aboard the International Space Station, flying about 240 miles above Earth, recorded this frame featuring a non-tropical cyclone located over northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Lake Manitoba (lower center) and Lake Winnipeg (lower right) are visible. The structure on the upper right is part of the Japanese Experiment Modules Exposed Facility (JEF). The hardware at top includes part of the port truss structure (solar arrays and radiators, and part of one of the ExPRESS Logistics Carriers).

The fourth tropical cyclone of the Eastern Pacific Ocean season formed on June 25 and by June 26 it was already a hurricane. NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite passed over Dora on June 25 when it was a tropical storm and the next day it became the first hurricane of the season. Tropical Depression Dora developed around 11 p.m. EDT on Saturday, June 24 about 180 miles (290 km) south of Acapulco, Mexico. By 5 a.m. EDT on June 25, the depression had strengthened into a tropical storm and was named Dora. At 19 36 UTC (3 36 p.m. EDT), the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite provided a visible-light image of the storm. The VIIRS imagery showed well-defined convective spiral bands of thunderstorms with a developing central dense overcast or CDO cloud feature. This stereoimage of Hurricane Alberto on August 19, 2000 was acquired by NASA's Terra satellite. At this time, the storm was located in the North Atlantic Ocean, west of the Azores. 3D glasses are necessary to view this image.

ISS043E078143 (03/31/2015) --- Astronauts on board the International Space Station captured this image on Mar. 31, 2015 of the category 5 super Typhoon Maysak which is headed toward the Philippines. The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellites, both co-managed by NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, captured rainfall and cloud data that revealed heavy rainfall and high thunderstorms in the strengthening storm.
