ISS009E20440 (27 August 2004) --- This photo of Hurricane Frances was taken by Astronaut Mike Fincke aboard the International Space Station as he flew 230 statute miles above the storm at about 9 a.m. CDT Friday, Aug. 27, 2004. At the time, Frances was located 820 miles east of the Lesser Antilles in the Atlantic Ocean, moving west-northwest at 10 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour. Fincke, the NASA ISS Science Officer and Flight Engineer, and Expedition 9 Commander Gennady Padalka are in the fifth month of a six-month flight aboard the Station.

ISS009-E-23123 (16 September 2004) --- Hurricane Ivan moves inland as photographed by astronaut Edward M. (Mike) Fincke aboard the International Space Station on Thursday afternoon (22:29:50 GMT, Sept. 16). Ivan made landfall early Thursday near Pensacola, Fla. and the Florida-Alabama border.

ISS039-E-005745 (29 March 2014) --- One of the Expedition 39 crew members aboard the International Space Station on March 29 used a 35mm lens on a digital still camera to photograph this pre-winter storm located just off the coast of southwestern Australia. The orbital outpost was located to the southwest of this weather system over the southeastern Indian Ocean near 45.6 degrees south latitude and 108.9 degrees west longitude. The panoramic view is towards the northeast, just before sunset local time (note the terminator approaching from the upper right). The storm is sweeping an early-season cold front in extreme southwestern Australia.

ISS012-E-10083 (3 Dec. 2005) --- This picture of the eye of Hurricane Epsilon in the Atlantic Ocean was taken at 15:35:56 GMT on Dec. 3, 2005 by one of the crewmembers of Expedition 12 aboard the International Space Station. The orbital outpost was flying at an altitude of 190 nautical miles. Center point coordinates are 34.5 degrees north latitude and 44.4 degrees west longitude.

ISS017-E-015718 (9 Sept. 2008) --- Hurricane Ike covers more than half of Cuba in this image, photographed by the crew of ISS-17 aboard the International Space Station from a vantage point of 220 statute miles above Earth. The center of Ike was near 22.4 degrees north latitude and 82.4 degrees west longitude and moving 290 degrees at 11.7 miles per hour. Sustained winds were at 80.6 miles per hour, with gusts to 97.9 miles per hour and were forecast to strengthen as the eye moved back over the warm water in the gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane Ian is pictured from the International Space Station as it orbited 258 miles above the Caribbean Sea east of Belize. At the time of this photograph, Ian was just south of Cuba gaining strength and heading toward Florida.

The orbital outpost was flying at an altitude of 190 nautical miles. Center point coordinates are 34.5 degrees north latitude and 44.4 degrees west longitude. As it continues moving in the Atlantic Ocean, the storm poses no threat to any land mass.

S115-E-06694 (17 Sept. 2006) --- Hurricane Helene was captured at 18:20:43 GMT, Sept. 17, 2006 with a digital still camera, equipped with a 20-35mm lens, by one of the crewmembers aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The center of the storm was located near 20.9 degrees north latitude and 49.0 degrees west longitude, while moving northwest. At the time the photo was taken, the sustained winds were 90 nautical miles per hour with gusts to 110 nautical miles per hour.

ISS017-E-010708 (9 July 2008) --- Hurricane Bertha was traveling northward at 10 knots (11.5 miles per hour) across the eastern part of the central Atlantic Ocean when this image was taken on July 9 by one of the Expedition 17 crewmembers aboard the International Space Station from a vantage point of 220 statute miles above the Earth. The sustained winds were 85 knots (97.9 miles per hour) with gusts up to 105 knots (121.0 miles per hour) and predicted to intensify. Mature and developing Cumulonimbus-type clouds are seen scattered through the cloud bands of the hurricane's system.

ISS009-E-22716 (14 September 2004) --- Hurricane Ivan was photographed as it churned in the Gulf of Mexico late Tuesday (23:09:41 GMT, Sept. 14) by astronaut Edward M. (Mike) Fincke aboard the International Space Station, 230 miles above Earth. At the time, Ivan was a category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 mph. Fincke, the NASA Station Science Officer, and Station Commander Gennady Padalka are in the final month of a six-month mission aboard the research platform.

NASA image acquired March 24, 2010.Tropical Cyclone Imani swirled over the Southern Indian Ocean on March 24, 2010. The same day, the U.S. Navys Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that the storm had maximum sustained winds of 55 knots (100 kilometers per hour) and gusts up to 70 knots (130 kilometers per hour). The storm was located roughly 745 nautical miles (1,380 kilometers) west-southwest of Cocos Island, having traveled toward the south-southwest for several hours.The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Terra satellite captured this natural-color image of the storm on March 24, 2010. Imani spans several hundred kilometers over the Southern Indian Ocean, producing thin, radial clouds on its northern margin. The storm occurs far from any major landmass.The JTWC forecast that Imani would continue traveling toward the south-southwest until reaching mid-latitude. . iss069e090102 (Sept. 19, 2023) --- Category 1 Hurricane Nigel, with its ragged eye, is pictured on a northeasterly track in the Atlantic Ocean as the International Space Station orbited 259 miles directly above.

Joaquin became a tropical storm Monday evening (EDT) midway between the Bahamas and Bermuda and has now formed into Hurricane Joaquin, the 3rd of the season--the difference is Joaquin could impact the US East Coast. NASA's GPM satellite captured Joaquin Tuesday, September 29th at 21 39 UTC (5 39 pm EDT).

ISS009-E-22488 (13 September 2004) ---- The eye of Hurricane Ivan, swirling with sustained winds of 160 mph at the time, was photographed as the storm entered the Gulf of Mexico late Monday (22:38:37 GMT, Sept. 13) by astronaut Edward M. (Mike) Fincke, 230 miles above the Earth aboard the International Space Station. Fincke and Station Commander Gennady Padalka are in the final month of a six-month stay aboard the research complex.

S115-E-06684 (17 Sept. 2006) --- Hurricane Gordon was captured at 18:15:36 GMT, Sept. 17, 2006 with a digital still camera, equipped with a 20-35mm lens, by one of the crewmembers aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis. The center of the storm was located near 34.0 degrees north latitude and 53.0 degrees west longitude, while moving north-northeast. At the time the photo was taken, the sustained winds were 70 nautical miles per hour with gusts to 85 nautical miles per hour.

NASA image acquired March 18, 2010.Tropical Cyclone Ului persisted south of the Solomon Islands on March 18, 2010. A bulletin from the U.S. Navys Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) issued the same day reported that the cyclone had maximum sustained winds of 80 knots (150 kilometers per hour) and gusts up to 100 knots (185 kilometers per hour). Although still strong, the wind speeds had significantly diminished over the previous few days.The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Terra satellite captured this true-color image of the storm on March 18, 2010. North of the storm lie the Solomon Islands (shown in the high-resolution image). Southeast of the storm is New Caledonia. Uluis eye appears to span 100 kilometers (60 miles) and the whole storm spans several hundred kilometers.As of 15:00 UTC on March 18 (2:00 a.m. on March 19 in Sydney, Australia), Ului was roughly 670 nautical miles (1,240 kilometers) east of Cairns, Australia. NASA and NOAA satellites are tracking the large winter storm that is expected to bring heavy snowfall to the U.S. mid-Atlantic region on Jan. 22 and 23. NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite snapped this image of the approaching blizzard around 2 35 a.m. EST on Jan. 22, 2016 using the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument's Day-Night band.

August 23, 2011 - Satellite view of Hurricane Irene approaching the Bahamas. No eye is visible in this image, but the extent of Irene's large cloud cover is seen from eastern Cuba over Hispaniola.

ISS011-E-10255 (9 July 2005) --- This easterly-looking image from the International Space Station shows Hurricane Dennis after the storm had already crossed Cuba and was heading for the northern Gulf of Mexico. Dennis was a Category 3 storm, packing winds of 115 miles per hour, at the time of exposure and located approximately 385 miles southeast of Biloxi, Mississippi or 280 miles south of Panama City, Florida. The eye of the hurricane is in the center of the frame, exposed at 22:06:54 (GMT), July 9, 2005. The dark triangle in loer right corner is part of the Space Station's window.

Icelands Eyjafjallajökull volcano produced its second major ash plume of 2010 beginning on May 7. Unlike the response to the earlier eruption, which began on April 14, 2010, the reaction to the new plume was better informed. Aircraft were diverted as needed to avoid damage, and again some airports were closed. But across Europe, planes were not grounded altogether, in part because computer models were used to predict the spread of volcanic ash. Most air passengers completed their journeys with minimal delay. Among the key constraints required to run volcanic plume simulation models are the height to which ash is injected into the atmosphere, and the amount and timing of ash released. The Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) instrument aboard NASAs Terra satellite passed just east of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano mid-morning on May 7, 2010

Phytoplankton bloom in the Great Australian Bight captured by the MODIS instrument on the Aqua satellite on December 30, 2013 at 6 05 UTC. The Great Australian Bight is a large bight, or open bay, off the central and western portions of the southern coastline of mainland Australia.

The monster winter storm that brought icing to the U.S. southeast moved northward along the Eastern Seaboard and brought snow, sleet and rain from the Mid-Atlantic to New England on February 13. A new image from NOAA's GOES satellite showed clouds associated with the massive winter storm stretch from the U.S. southeast to the northeast. Data from NOAA's GOES-East satellite taken on Feb. 13 at 1455 UTC/9 45 a.m. EST were made into an image by NASA/NOAA's GOES Project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The clouds and fallen snow data from NOAA's GOES-East satellite were overlaid on a true-color image of land and ocean created by data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument that flies aboard NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites.The image showed that the clouds associated with the storm were blanketing much of the U.S. East Coast. At 3 11 a.m. EST, a surface map issued by the National Weather Service or NWS showed the storm's low pressure

ISS017-E-012465 (4 Aug. 2008) --- Tropical Storm Edouard, as photographed from the International Space Station by one of the Expedition 17 crewmembers onboard, from a vantage point of 220 statute miles above the Earth, stirs in the Gulf of Mexico roughly 24 hours prior to landfall at a point east of Galveston, Texas

This is a satellite image from the MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite of Tropical Storm Andrea that was captured today, June 7 at 12 10 p.m. EDT- as Andrea makes its way up the U.S. East coast. At this time, Andrea was centered over North Carolina.

These four images of Tropical Cyclone Ramasun were obtained July 3, 2002 by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder experiment system onboard NASA's Aqua spacecraft.

MISR carries nine cameras fixed at different angles, each of which viewed Michael over the course of approximately seven minutes when it was just off Florida's west coast on Tuesday, October 9. Images from the nine views are used to calculate the height of the cloud tops, and the motion of the clouds between the views provides information on wind speed and direction. This composite image shows the view from the central, downward-pointing camera (left), the calculated cloud-top heights (middle), and wind velocity vectors (right) superimposed on the image. The length of the arrows is proportional to wind speed and the colors show the altitude of the cloud tops in kilometers. The National Hurricane Center clocked Michael's sustained wind speed at 150 mph (240 kph) just before noon local time on Wednesday. It is expected to bring strong winds, storm surge and heavy rain to much of the southeast.

. NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP Satellite Captures Night-time Look at Cyclone Felleng

NASA image acquired August 28, 2012 Early on August 28, 2012, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi-NPP satellite captured this nighttime view of Tropical Storm Isaac and the cities near the Gulf Coast of the United States. The image was acquired just after local midnight by the VIIRS day-night band,” which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses light intensification to enable the detection of dim signals. In this case, the clouds of Isaac were lit by moonlight.

It is easy to see the effect of the strong northeasterly wind shear battering Tropical Storm Gaemi in satellite imagery from NASA. This true-color image acquired on Oct. 5 shows a large oval-shaped area of showers and thunderstorms associated with the storm, southwest of the exposed center of circulation. NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Tropical Storm Gaemi as it was approaching Vietnam on Oct. 5, 2012 at 0550 UTC (1 50 a.m. EDT). A true-color image of the storm was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument and shows bulk of showers and thunderstorms were clearly to the southwest of the center. The circulation center appears as a ring of concentric bands of clouds northeast of the large rounded area of clouds and showers associated with the storm. On Tuesday, October 5, 2012 at 1500 UTC (11 a.m. EDT), Tropical Storm Gaemi still had maximum sustained winds near 35 knots (40 mph/65 km/h) as it did 24 hours before. ISS009-E-21199 (2 September 2004) --- From 230 miles above, this is a nadir view of Hurricane Frances as it churned in the Atlantic Ocean almost 500 miles east-southeast of West Palm Beach, Fla., at about 8 a.m EDT Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004. At the time, Frances was a category 4 hurricane with winds of 145 mph. Astronaut Edward M. (Mike) Fincke took this photo through the window of the International Space Station. Expedition 9 Commander Gennady Padalka and Fincke, the NASA ISS Science Officer and Flight Engineer, are in the fifth month of a six-month stay on the orbiting research platform.

ISS021-E-016853 (30 Oct. 2009) --- Backdropped by a blue and white part of Earth, the unpiloted Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV), filled with trash and unneeded items, departs from the International Space Station. European Space Agency astronaut Frank De Winne, Expedition 21 commander; NASA astronaut Nicole Stott and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Robert Thirsk, both flight engineers, used the stations Canadarm2 robotic arm to grab the HTV cargo craft and unberth it from the Harmony nodes nadir port. The HTV was successfully unberthed at 10:18 a.m. (CDT) on Oct. 30, 2009, and released from the stations Canadarm2 at 12:32 p.m.

STS040-75-003 (5-14 June 1991) --- This image shows several of the Canary Islands, located in the North Atlantic Ocean just west of Africa. Low level stratus clouds often form here (and along the west coast of continents at these latitudes) are trapped in vertical movement due to an overlying atmospheric temperature inversion. The islands are generating disturbances in the low-level wind flow which is generally from the north-northeast or from top to bottom in the image. These disturbances travel downstream from the islands and manifest themselves as cloud swirls which are called von Karman vortices. The northern extent of a large dust storm moving off the coast of Africa is apparent at the lower right of the image. The dust, extended across the Atlantic Ocean as far west as the Dominican Republic later in the mission.

This NOAA GOES-west satellite image shows high pressure over the 4 corners region (Utah, Colorado, northern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico), and the National Weather Service has forecast snow north of the high in the Wasatch range and adjacent valleys. Toward the top of the GOES image, there's a strong Pacific storm moving onshore that NWS expects will bring high winds, heavy rains, and feet of snow to the northwestern U.S. There's a flood watch in effect for portions of western Washington State through Saturday night (January 11), that includes the counties of King, Mason, Pierce, and Snohomish. That storm will bring more snow to the Wasatch range that's getting snow today. WASHINGTON (Aug. 28, 2012) A GOES-13 infrared satellite image of Tropical Storm Isaac provided by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Monterey, Calif., shows the storm at 1:00 a.m. EST. Isaac is expected to strengthen into a hurricane and impact the Gulf Coast of the United States.

ISS012-E-5235 (19 Oct. 2005) --- This image of Hurricane Wilma was taken at 8:22 a.m. CDT Wednesday, Oct. 19, by the crew aboard NASA's international space station as the complex flew 222 miles above the storm. At the time, Wilma was the strongest Atlantic hurricane in history, with winds near 175 miles per hour. The storm was located in the Caribbean Sea, 340 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico.

Summertime heat and humidity in the U.S. East Coast is on hold for a couple of days thanks to a cold front and that brought clouds, showers, thunderstorms, and some severe weather on July 16 to the coast. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) noted that the dip in the jet stream will create below normal temperatures for most of the Central and Eastern U.S. for the next couple of days. NOAA's GOES-East satellite captured an image of the clouds associated with the cold front on July 16 at 1630 UTC (12 30 p.m. EDT).The clouds follow the front which stretches from the Florida panhandle, across Florida and up the U.S. East Coast into eastern Canada. Along the front lie two areas of low pressure, one over eastern New England, and the other offshore from South Carolina. ISS011-E-12838 (11 September 2005, 19:21:12 GMT) --- Framed by a window on the Destiny lab aboard the Space Station, this image of Hurricane Ophelia was captured by the Expedition 11 crew on the afternoon of September 11, 2005. The hurricane, located at 31.6 degrees north latitude and 75.8 degrees west longitude, was packing winds of 80 miles per hour when the photo was made.
