(35.8 x 28.4 cm). Date: 1895-97.This veiled figure, engrossed in her novel, was probably sited in the Boston Common or Public Garden. Brushed in fluid watercolor, the sheet employs the same basic palette of blue, yellow, green, and red found throughout the Boston Public Garden Sketchbook. Woman Bathing in a Shallow Tub 1885 Edgar Degas French When Degas showed his "suite of nudes," including this pastel, at the eighth and final Impressionist exhibition in 1886, critics viciously attacked the ungainly poses of his bathers. After the exhibition Degas gave the picture to Mary Cassatt in exchange for her painting Girl Arranging Her Hair (National Gallery of Art, Washington).
