Swan and Iris (Sketch after Cecil Lawson's "Swan and Iris") 1883 James McNeill Whistler American Whistler's etching is based on an unfinished painting by the British landscapist Lawson, a member of the Idyllists. The tranquil riverscape is composed of a flowering iris in the foreground, and a swan with outstretched wings moving across an expanse of water, perhaps the River Thames, towards a bank in the middle distance. The composition is framed by the wide span of an arched bridge. The print was commissioned as an illustration for a posthumous biography of Lawson written by Edmund Gosse and published in 1883, a copy of which is in the Museum's collection (17.3.2983). Hadleigh Castle: Large Plate 1830-49 David Lucas British In 1829, Lucas became involved in a project with John Constable to execute a select group of Constables landscape paintings in mezzotint, a tonal engraving medium in which the plate is roughened with a tool called a rocker so that its burr retains the printing ink to varying degrees. Constable saw the early proofs and requested that Lucas bring him more examples: "Bring me another large ‘Castle, or two, or three, for it is mighty fine, though it looks as if all the chimney sweepers in Christendom had been at work on it and thrown their soot bags up in the air." This large plate was first published in 1849, following Constables death, and is based on a painting that Constable associated with "melancholy grandeur," a mood which is echoed here before the addition of figures and animals in later trials.. Date: 1861.Sharply receding mooring posts and a high embankment at right direct our eye toward distant warehouses and a church in Lambeth, on the south bank of the Thames. This effect, together with the cropped form of a massive barge at lower left, and spatial leaps in the foreground, echo devices found in Japanese woodblock prints. Whistler selected this image to advertise an 1861 exhibition of his etchings held by the print dealer Edmund Thomas at 39 Old Bond Street.
