A New "Mayflower" To Sail The Atlantic - The tail stem of the new Mayflower rises up through the roof of the main workshop at the shipyard at Brixham.A craftsmen-built copy of the "Mayflower" which carried the pilgrim fathers to the new world 335 years ago is being built at Brixham, Devon, England, for presentation to the United States of America as a gesture of friendship.It is scheduled for launching in February next year and will be rigged and manned ready for the voyage to USA by June.No plans exist of the original craft and the 20th century Mayflower is being designed to accord with oil paintings and historical sketches. The new 29,500 ton P & O liner "Iberia", which is being launched at Belfast on January 21st, is being fitted with Denny Brown stabilising equipment to lessen rolling in heavy seas, minimizing a 14° roll to one of 2° immediately. Normally the fins, which measure approximately 12' x 6' and are below the water line, are fitted when a vessel goes into dry dock but in the case of the "Iberia" they were put into position while she was still on the stocks and the photograph illustrates this.The "Iberia's" sister ship "Arcadia", which is leaving London on her maiden voyage to Australia on February 22nd, is also being fitted with stabilising fins but these are being inserted in the usual way, while the ship is in Liverpool dry dock. 90 Dead In Paris Cinema Fire -- An interior view of the gutted cinema showing collapsed balconies.Ninety persons lost their lives and 200 were injured in a fire that broke out August 30 in a cinema at Rueil on the outskirts of Paris. The fire, believed to have been due to a short circuit, started under the dress circle and spread with terrifying speed. The upper circle caught fire and collapsed with most of its load of spectators on to the dress circle, which in turn gave way. A judicial inquiry has been opened.
