S73-32499 (July 1973) --- Dr. Ray Gause of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) places dinner, in the form of a housefly, in the web of Arabella - the prime spider for the ED-52 Web Formation Experiment. Arabella can be delineated near the end of the black pen in Dr. Gause's hand. The experiment is one of 25 student experiments accepted for the Skylab program and will be performed during the Skylab 3 mission. Judy Miles, a 17-year-old high school student from Lexington, Massachusetts, is the student experimenter and Dr. Gause is the NASA student advisor.

During the Apollo 15 launch activities in the launch control center's firing room 1 at Kennedy Space Center, Dr. Wernher von Braun, NASA's Deputy Associate Administrator for planning, takes a closer look at the launch pad through binoculars. The fifth manned lunar landing mission, Apollo 15 (SA-510), carrying a crew of three astronauts Mission commander David R. Scott, Lunar Module pilot James B. Irwin, and Command Module pilot Alfred M. Worden Jr., lifted off on July 26, 1971. Astronauts Scott and Irwin were the first to use a wheeled surface vehicle, the Lunar Roving Vehicle, or the Rover, which was designed and developed by the Marshall Space Flight Center, and built by the Boeing Company. Astronauts spent 13 days, nearly 67 hours, on the Moon's surface to inspect a wide variety of its geological features.

(Jean) Frederick Joliot-Curie (1900-1958), French physicist, in about 1930. The apparatus is a Wilson cloud chamber. Joliot became assistant to Marie Curie in 1925. In 1926 he married Irene Curie and in 1935 shared with her the Nobel prize for chemistry for the discovery of artificial radioactivity.

S66-22933 (18 Feb. 1966) --- Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong undergoes weight and balance tests in the Pyrotechnic Installation Building, Merritt Island, Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

At Machine That Flashed A Picture Half Way Around The World And Back -- A Young Miss inspecting the television apparatus which sent a picture 20,000 miles to Sydney Australia in one-eighth of a second. The picture, a rectangular design painted in black and white, was then sent back to schenectady. The experiment was a success. The picture was easily recognizable after its 40,000 mile round trip. During the test Dr. E.F.W. Alexanderson carried on a two-way conversation with the Australian station. He will direct further transmission for the general electric company in order to perfect long distance television transmission and reception. February 20, 1930. This photograph was taken after Dr. von Braun moved from his post as Director of the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) to Deputy Associate Administrator for Planning at NASA Headquarters. On June 27, 1970, he visited the MSFC again during the centers 10th anniversary to look at a mockup of the spacecraft that would later be known as Skylab. Bamberger and Co in Newark, N.J. to-day. The large sphere to the right of the photograph contains a lamp which is being measured by a photocell or 'electric eye' in combination with electrical measuring apparatus.

Women Adequately Filling Posts In NACA Laboratory: Nearly 200 women are employed at the Langley Laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in a limited capacity as mechanicsÕ helpers and minor laboratory aids on the jobs formerly handled by men, according to E.H. Derring, of the Aerodynamics Division. Many phases of the operations of various wind tunnels at the laboratory are now handled by women with experienced male supervision. Mr. Derring said, pointing out that the reading of the data indicated on wind tunnel instruments during a test is done in a large measure by women. In addition to reading the instruments and computing and integrating engineering test data obtained from tunnel investigations, the minor laboratory aides assist in the preparation of aircraft models preliminary to testing. Women employees who will serve in the Aerodynamics Division of the Laboratory attend an orientation class for two weeks, during which they receive instruction on phases
