This scale model depicts the Materials Science Research Rack-1 (MSRR-1) being developed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and the European Space Agency (ESA) for placement in the Destiny laboratory module aboard the International Space Station. The rack is part of the plarned Materials Science Research Facility (MSRF) and is expected to include two furnace module inserts, a Quench Module Insert (being developed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center) to study directional solidification in rapidly cooled alloys and a Diffusion Module Insert (being developed by the European Space Agency) to study crystal growth, and a transparent furnace (being developed by NASA's Space Product Development program). Multi-user equipment in the rack is being developed under the auspices of NASA's Office of Biological and Physical Research (OBPR) and ESA. Artist EV Day visited the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to learn about the Mars Exploration Rovers. She so intrigued the Mars scientists that she was given a sample rover wheel to work with in creating a piece of art titled "Wheel of Optimism" for NASA. Day took the wheel and created a Martian world within it complete with organic plantlife, rocks and a Martian landscape in the background. Day poetically grapples with the age old question of whether life on Mars exists or whether it is just an figment of our science fiction imaginations. JSC2003-E-39020 (May 2003) --- This graphic shows the International Space Station Node 2 module. The installment of Node 2 to the station will signify the U.S. Core Complete stage of assembly, at which time the station can support the addition of international laboratories from Europe and Japan. Node 2 will provide a passageway between four International Space Station science experiment modules the U.S. Destiny Laboratory, the Kibo Japanese Experiment Module, the European Columbus Laboratory and the Centrifuge Accommodation Module. Under contract of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), Alenia Spazio in Turin, Italy led a consortium of European sub-contractors to build Node 2. The module was built for NASA under a barter agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) in exchange for the launch of the European Columbus Laboratory by the space shuttle to the International Space Station.

Table orrery by Hartog van Laun (c. 1733-1815), Amsterdam, c. 1800-1808 wood, brass, ivory. The instrument-maker Harton van Laun designed a table orrery - a mechanical device to show the relative positions and movement of the sun, earth, moon and planets. He used the instrument for his own lectures, but he achieved true success with it only when the Amsterdam professor Jan Hendrik van Swinden fully explained it at the Felix Meritis Society in 1802 and published articles about it.

This simulation shows the motions the robotic arm on NASA's Perseverance rover carried out during its first two-hour checkout since its Feb. 18, 2021 touchdown on Mars. This simulation does not run in real-time. A key objective for Perseverance's mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet's geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and dust). Subsequent NASA missions, in cooperation with ESA (European Space Agency), would send spacecraft to Mars to collect these sealed samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis. The Mars 2020 Perseverance mission is part of NASA's Moon to Mars exploration approach, which includes Artemis missions to the Moon that will help prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet. The Transient Dendritic Solidification Expepriment (TDSE) is being developed as a candidate for flight aboard the International Space Station. TDSE will study the growth of dendrites (treelike crystalline structures) in a transparent material (succinonitrile or SCN) that mimics the behavior of widely used iron-based metals. Basic work by three Space Shuttle missions of the Isothermal Dendritic Growth Expepriment (IDGE) is yielding new insights into virtually all industrially relevant metal and alloy forming operations. The TDSE is similar to IDGE, but will maintain a constant temperature while varying pressure on the dendrites. Shown here is an exploded view of major elements of TDSE.
