Under a palm motif surrounded by festons and rosette flowers and crowned by a chalice, from which two branches with pointed leaves develop, which carry a large light yellow flower with red bires and blue and white centerpiece. Chasuble, 1700s. Italy, 18th century. Embroidery; silk and metallic threads; overall: 114.6 x 70.5 cm (45 1/8 x 27 3/4 in.). A beautiful design emanates from a vase in the center of this chasuble, displaying symmetrical flora that extend across embroidered gold braids into graceful curvilinear cartouches, reflecting contemporary architectural decoration. Also in the center, sheaves of wheat and grapes represent the bread and wine of the Mass. Gold sequins within thread-outlined squares illustrate fine quality workmanship.

Bizarre Silk Panel, 18th century, 34 1/2 x 21 in. (87.63 x 53.34 cm), Silk; complex weave with supplementary weft patterning, France, 18th century, European silks of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century often display unusual motifs and dramatic compositions resulting from the interchange between East and West. The successful voyages of the East India trading companies opened up new horizons for European design, as cargoes of porcelain, lacquer work and textiles reached the continent and stimulated the imaginations of artists. These so-called Bizarre silks are characterized by elongated diagonal and exotic, abstract elements, juxtaposed in overlapping patterns and spiraling curves, often enhanced by gold and metallic threads. At this time France took over the lead in the silk industry from Italy, and began to set the tone in fashion. Many bizarre silks were made into clothing, such as men's waistcoats and women's dresses.

Portière Made 1901 United States. Chicago architect George W. Maher was one of many Americans who embraced the English Arts and Crafts movement, incorporating into his residential designs an emphasis on simplicity, natural forms, and respect for materials. This silk and cotton PortiËre hung over a doorway in Maherís James A. Patten house in Evanston, Illinois, built in 1901. The highly stylized and linear thistle motif created for this panel and other elements of the Patten house by Maher and designer Louis J. Millet helped achieve the decorative rhythm and unity that Maher believed was essential to the successful design of any residence.. Bird designed 1878 Designed by William Morris British This pattern was registered in 1878; Morris designed it for the walls of the drawing room of his family home, Kelmscott House, in the Hammersmith area of London, which they occupied from 1878 until his death in 1896. It continued to be made after Morris & Company established textile production at Merton Abbey in 1881, and it was produced in three colorways. Morris himself referred to this type of fabric as "woven wool tapestry," though it is not technically a tapestry weave but a doublecloth. The effect of this heavy wool fabric when used as a wall covering, as it was at Kelmscott House, is a fine example of Morris' interpretation of the decorative arts of that era. Bird 221485
