'Polonaise' Carpet. Dimensions: Rug: L. 158 in. (401.3 cm)W. 70 in. (177.8 cm). Date: 17th century.When, in 1878, a carpet similar to this one was exhibited in Paris, it was assumed that the coats of arms woven into the rug were Polish and that the rug was made in Poland. It was later recognized that this group, distinguished by a silk pile and metallic brocading, was Persian, made during and after the reign of Shah 'Abbas I, beginning around the end of the sixteenth or early seventeenth century. The name, however, persisted, and more than 200 examples still bear the name. Many pairs of the type also survive.The type of design on this carpet has its roots in earlier Iranian carpets, but the rich silk pile, highlighted with gold and silver brocading, and muted but lively colors, signaled a change from the past. On blue ground a pattern is applied to white, red, yellow, light and thunder-brown and black, a pattern of diamond-shaped figures formed by four storks, alternatively with the beaks and the legs drew towards each other. Within these windows, a tilted castle with three towers, from the extremes of which winged angels are rising to keep a crown over the head of a deer, elephant or unicorn. Wallpaper Design, Brush and gouache, graphite on white paper, A dado is shown at the bottom, an entablature with a gilt ovolo at the bottom, on top. The lower part of the design suggests for the panel a division in vertical stripes. Broad blue stripes alternate with narrow white ones. Palmettes are suggested for the decoration of the latter ones. The broad stripes are subdivided in a broad central one of a lighter blue and two lateral narrow ones. These show outwardly directed plant palmettes. Vertical chains decorate the broad stripes, with plants in the painted ovoids. The upper part of the design suggests alternatively rows of circles, with plants in an inner disk. Disks with petals are in the wedges in the intervals of the circles. Two alternate designs are suggested for the plants, differing in the design and the coloring. Fragments of a Trellis Pattern Carpet ca. 1650 The original length of this carpet was an impressive thirty feet, indicating its use in a royal building for hosting audiences or other special occasions. Similar trellises enclosing blossoms were also painted on the walls and ceilings of such buildings, and floral friezes covered the dadoes and facades, creating a world of sumptuous flowers surrounding the emperor. Kashmir, with its pashmina shawlweaving tradition, is probably the source of pashmina carpets such as this, but workshops in Lahore also produced many imperial-grade carpets in the mid-seventeenth century.. Embroidered Armenian liturgical curtain, 1763. Turkey, Constantinople/Istanbul, Ottoman period. Twill weave: wool; embroidery, chain stitch: silk, gilt- and silver-metal thread; overall: 183 x 119.4 cm (72 1/16 x 47 in.). This rare Ottoman embroidery features a floral bouquet that enriches the field under an elegant arch of gilt-metal thread. Flanked by vines of tulips and irises on a silver-metal-thread ground, vases of tulips and jonquils within cartouches adorn the main border and the well-turned corners, a sign of high quality. Dated 1763, the textile documents a mid-18th-century style and technique uncommon in Ottoman embroideries. The Armenian community commissioned this pattern for a liturgical curtain. Beneath the arch, Saint John the Baptist appears with a staff of victory, holding his own severed head in one arm and the Lamb of God in the other.
