The pattern joins white trilobed arches with a repeat design of green hop blossoms, stylized vegetal motifs, and yellow scrolling ornaments that recall the lush interior settings of the Alhambra, an extensive royal complex overlooking the city of Granada. Bed curtain border late 19th century Russian This object is from the collection of Natalia de Shabelsky (1841-1905), a Russian noblewoman compelled to preserve what she perceived as the vanishing folk art traditions of her native country. Traveling extensively throughout Great Russia, she collected many fine examples of textile art of the wealthy peasant class. From the 1870s until moving to France in 1902, Shabelsky amassed a large collection of intricately embroidered hand-woven household textiles and opulent festival garments with rich decoration and elaborate motifs. The Brooklyn Museum holdings include many fine examples including the majority of the garments. Panel of velvet mid-15th century Italian or Spanish Sumptuous velvets were among the most highly prized luxury fabrics of the Renaissance. Woven in both Spain and the Italian peninsula, they were exported throughout Europe and became as essential component of the visual "magnificence" with which the ruling elite demonstrated their wealth and power. Contemporary paintings, tapestries and documents demonstrate the varied uses of such velvets-this panel was once part of an ecclesiastical vestment. Shawl 1860-69 French This intricate shawl has the mark of a finely woven French piece with its velvety feel and the appearance of a smooth back, which is the result of the clipping process. The elegant curving lines of the cone shapes and the interior border indicate its French origins. The signature is also of interest in that the maker's mark is woven into the shawl to imitate the style of the embroidered makers' marks of Indian shawls. Signed French shawls are of the highest quality of the shawls made outside India.The shawl held a place as a high fashion accessory for a relatively large period between the end of the 18th century to the 1870s.
