This plate demonstrates the commercial exchange of productsin this case prints and porcelainbetween Europe and Asia in the 1700s. Here, a Chinese porcelain factory adapted a French print to decorate a dish for the European market. It depicts a fable by Jean de La Fontaine in which a barrel-maker’s wife dallies with a lover while her husband is working.

Medallion with the Baptism of Christ in the River Jordan. According to the inscription on the border of this medallion, it was made to commemorate the baptism of Jan Baptiste Barchman Wuytiers, the son of Cornelis Barchman Wuytiers and Elisabeth Dommer, in Amsterdam in 1665. While the medallion will have been crafted in the Netherlands, its technique and ornamentation follow international fashion. Painted enamel garden flowers and plants were also popular at the French court at this time.

Hercules and Nessus before 1584 Annibale Fontana One of the major glyptic artists working in Milan during the second half of the sixteenth century, Fontana engraved exquisitely luminous Late Mannerist scenes from classical mythology and biblical subjects in rock crystal. A casket, set with Fontana's rock-crystal plaques and made for Albrecht V, duke of Bavaria (r. 1550-79), can still to be seen in the Schatzkammer of the Munich Residenz. The Metropolitan Museum's medallion is one of a series of six surviving rock crystals engraved with episodes from the story of Hercules; the medallions were removed from a casket, now destroyed, that once belonged to the Gonzaga duke of Mantua, Vincenzo I (r. 1587-1612). Dish with European Woman and Child late 18th-19th century China Although the subject of this scene cannot be identified, the chubbiness of the child and his lack of clothing suggest that he was inspired by European depictions of cherubs, the angelic figures often shown as attendants of Greek or Roman gods. Armchair designed ca. 1786, woven 1790-91; chair frame second half 19th century Tapestry upholstery by Beauvais Tapestry-woven upholstery for two settees and twelve armchairs was commissioned at the same time as the wall hangings depicting the Four Continents (1978.404.1-.4).¹ The Four Continents was one of two suites-each including four wall tapestries and coordinating seating furniture-that were ordered from Beauvais in 1786; the subject of the other suite was to be a series illustrating the arts, sciences, agriculture, and commerce. An earlier suite of tapestry furniture covers depicting the continents was produced at the Royal Manufactory of Gobelins in 1748, and the arrangement of the motifs in Le Barbiers covers is similar: personifications of the continents are set against a landscape on the seat backs, and native animals populate the seat covers.² This subject in tapestry aligns with the contemporary popularity of the Four Continents in eighteenth-century European art: everyth

They often depicted religious or mythological subjects, portraits or heraldic devices. However, the unusual subject depicted here, shows an old man, at left, clasping the breast of the woman, at center, while she takes money from his purse with her right hand. Her left hand holds that of the young man, on the right. The inscription reads: AMOUR FAIT MONLT ARGENT FAIT TOUT (Love does much; money does everything)..
