Beside a White Cock and Hen (From the Series The Spring Cave), 1825. Totoya Hokkei (Japanese, 1780-1850). Color woodblock print; sheet: 18.5 x 21.6 cm (7 5/16 x 8 1/2 in.). These elegant surimono prints come from a set of five images inspired by the legend of the Shinto Supreme Sun Goddess, Amaterasu. She was once so offended by her brother that she retreated to a cave, leaving the earth in darkness. Several attempts to lure her out with cocks crowing, music-making, and a goddess dancing failed, but a mirror hung from a nearby tree made Amaterasu curious, bringing her to the entrance of the cave. A stone was quickly placed at the entrance to block her way back into the cave, and light was restored to the world. Each print is set against a blue evening sky with embossed clouds enriched with gold, silver, and copper.

A Courtesan and Her Attendants with a Revolving Shadow Lantern ca. 1715-20 Attributed to Okumura Masanobu A courtesan and her two young female attendants enjoy watching a type of revolving shadow lantern (mawari dr). A spinning wheel was attached to a stick inserted into the middle to act as the spinner. When a candle was lit and placed inside the lantern, the rising air current caused the wheel to spin, which in turn rotated the inner frame and cast a shadow on the outer layer. The revolving lantern consists of an outer frame onto which a thin layer of paper is attached, and inside is a paper cylinder with cut-out shapes of a procession of a courtesan and her entourage. A candle illuminates the cylinder as it is rotated to create optical illusion that the figures are in motion. Here the lantern projects a parading courtesan (shinzo), child attendants (kamuro), and servants (kasha). Though the print is entitled Keisei nayose (names of courtesans), the libretto is actually a playful

Painting competition between three men. Two older men watch while a younger man makes a painting of a long-haired turtle (minogame). This surimono clearly shows a painting competition between Tôbôbôsaku (far right), Miura No ôsuke (with black court hat) and Urashimatarô (foreground). According to legend, Urashimatarje once made a trip on a long-haired turtle, which is why he depicts it. A minogame would get a tail of seaweed after he was more than 1000 years old, hence the long-haired turtle symbol stands for a long life. Miura No ôsuke has shown the figures of the short months (1,3,5,7,10) for the year 1829. The figures for the long months are circled in the text at the top of the surimono. This print was a New Year Surimono for the Miuraya Hikohachi, a store in writing accessories in Edo (current Tokyo), and was not intended for sale, as the black cartouche listed at the bottom left. Twenty-Four Japanese examples or Philial Piety for the Honchôren. A man works with a scythe on the land, while his mother gets a cup of tea under a tree. The title of this print refers to the ten-part historiography on behalf of Emperor Montoku, written from 851 to 879. It counts as one of the six national history issues of Japan. The performance refers to the story about Ono NO Takamura (802-852) that refused to travel to China to a delegation because he could not take care of his parents. As a punishment, he was banned to the island of Oki, but was later forgiven because of his shown wants to take care of his parents. With two poems.

Suzuki Harunobu (1724 July 7, 1770) was a Japanese woodblock print artist, one of the most famous in the Ukiyo-e style. He was an innovator, the first to produce full-color prints (nishiki-e) in 1765, rendering obsolete the former modes of two- and three-color prints. Harunobu used many special techniques, and depicted a wide variety of subjects, from classical poems to contemporary beauties (bijin, bijin-ga). Like many artists of his day, Harunobu also produced a number of shunga, or erotic images. During his lifetime and shortly afterwards, many artists imitated his style. A few, such as Harushige, even boasted of their ability to forge the work of the great master. Much about Harunobu's life is unknown.

Momotarô; Wisdom, virtue and bravery from old stories; Mukashibanashi Chijinyû. A young Momotarô, the main character from the eponymous fairy tale, dressed in court dress is sitting next to New Year's decorations of a crayfish, round rice cakes (kagamimochi), fern leaves (Urajiro) and orange tree leaves (Daidai). With four poems. Momotarô originated from a peach found in a river. He travels around with a monkey, a pheasant and a dog, beats the giant king and reflects with treasures back to the couple who ever found him.

Hôjô Tokiyori; Twenty-four generals for the Katsushika Cleaning Association; Katsushika Nijûshishô. Hôjô Tokiyori (1227-1256) was the Premier of the Kamakura Shogun Kujô Yoritsugu. Tokiyori was his loyal advisor and was very aware of the neediness of the people. With one poem.

Ichikawa Danjûrô Looking into a mirror. The Schminkte Kabuki actor Ichikaiwa Danjûrô VII (1791-1859) looks into a mirror, in preparation for his role of otokonosuke in the play Meiboku Sendai Hagi. The piece was raised in 1829 in the Kawarazaki Theater in Edo. With two poems.

Woman makes a sand painting, A seated woman (actor Segawa Kikunojô V (1802-32) in an unknown woman role), makes a sand painting on a sheet of lacquerware. Next to the painting are two spoons, a wooden spatula and a paint box on the far left. The painting represents Mount Fuji, seen from the beach of Matsu no Shimabara.
