Winter Horse Raiding Episode, c. 1910, Old Bull, Lakȟóta, born 1845, 35 x 29 in. (88.9 x 73.7 cm), Pigment on canvas, United States, 20th century, Plains artists used a variety of methods to record their activities, drawing or painting scenes as visual tools to tell their stories. In this drawing Old Bull depicts three episodes from a horse raiding expedition against the Apsaalooka (Crow). The story begins in the lower right corner, showing the artist and his comrades, in their cold-weather clothing of wool leggings and hooded coats, leading a group of horses away from an Apsaalooka village. A battle ensues, forcing Old Bull and his men to take defense behind large boulders, shown in the middle of the drawing. The final scene was drawn in the upper right corner where Old Bull has loaded a wounded young man on a travois. The labeling and lines that separate the different scenes were probably added by a collector in an attempt to make the story easier to understand.

Akbar (Urdu: جلال الدین محمد اکبر , Hindi: लालुद्दीन मुहम्मद अकबर, Jalāl ud-Dīn Muhammad Akbar), also known as Shahanshah Akbar-e-Azam or Akbar the Great (25 October 1542 - 27 October 1605), was the third Mughal Emperor. He was of Timurid descent; the son of Emperor Humayun, and the grandson of Emperor Babur, the ruler who founded the Mughal dynasty in India. At the end of his reign in 1605 the Mughal empire covered most of the northern and central India. Akbar was thirteen years old when he ascended the Mughal throne in Delhi (February 1556), following the death of his father Humayun. During his reign, he eliminated military threats from the powerful Pashtun descendants of Sher Shah Suri, and at the Second Battle of Panipat he decisively defeated the newly self-declared Hindu king Hemu. It took him nearly two more decades to consolidate his power and bring all the parts of northern and central India into his direct realm. He dominated the whole of the Indian Subcontinent and he ruled

Prince Siegfried (also known as Sigurd), the famed hero of Germanic mythology, was the son of King Siegmund of the Netherlands. His wife was Kriemhild, the heroine of the Nibelungenlied. Siegfried is one of the heroes of the Nibelungenlied and also of Richard Wagner's Opera titled Siegfried. In this early 1900s illustration, Siegfried is shown in combatand all the tales of his combats have him as the victor.

Specifically, the print shows four horsemen practicing the course of the ring, a contest that required each of them to catch with the point of his lance a suspended ring while riding his horse at full speed.Although the course of the ring was immensely popular across sixteenth-century Europe, and gradually supplanted hazardous jousts and other forms of mock combats, over the late eighteenth century it quickly became outmoded, except in the German-speaking world. The Latin and German titles of this print aptly celebrate this remarkable continuity by equating the equestrian games (Ludi equestres) of the eighteenth century with the venerable tournament (Das Thurnieren)..
