Salvator Rosa among the Brigands after 1844 Adolphe Pierre Riffaut During the 1840s, the Italian Baroque painter Salvator Rosa was celebrated in Britain and France as a proto-Romantic artist known especially for his depictions of bandits in rugged landscapes, such as Bandits on a Rocky Coast, 1655-60 (134.137). Rosa's own life story conflated with his subject matter and published biographies such as Lady Morgans "The Life and Times of Salvator Rosa" (1824) recounted the myth of his own capture by bandits in the Abruzzi mountains. This print reproduces a painting (now lost) by Guignet based on this tale that he exhibited in the Salon of 1844. The commentary accompanying its publication in the journal "L'Artiste" on March 24, 1844 stated, "The story of Salvator Rosa among the brigands is as well known as that of Adam and Eve." Guignet's reputation became closely associated with Rosa. Poet and critic Charles Baudelaire even remarked upon the affinity between their works in his Salon crit

Ruins on the Right of the Via Appia ca. 1789 Carlo Labruzzi This imposing landscape executed in watercolor over graphite is relatively finished. The composition exhibits a double framing outline and an inscription at the top of the sheet, 93,” written in the same ink, all of which indicates this was an autonomous work in and of itself. The composition depicts two men one seated and one standing as they explore the landscape and monumental ruins of a wall which is overgrown with foliage. The ruins are those at a particular site, about 22 km, on the Via Appia in Rome.This watercolor by Carlo Labruzzi, an accomplished Roman neoclassical painter and graphic artist, is a typical work by his hand. Its style closely resembles that of the 226 landscape drawings from the series on the Via Appia, executed in pen and brown ink with brush and brown wash (without color), now housed in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana and which were published thoroughly only in 2013. Entrance to the Grotto of Posillipo, Naples. Artist: John "Warwick" Smith (British, Irthington, Cumberland 1749-1831 London). Dimensions: Sheet: 9 in. × 13 1/16 in. (22.9 × 33.2 cm). Date: 1778-9.This Roman tunnel cut through the rock near Naples provides access to coastal towns to the west and was a favorite subject for artists. Smith lived in Italy between 1776 and 1781, supported by George Greville, 2nd earl of Warwick, and worked closely with fellow Britons William Pars, Thomas Jones and Francis Towne to develop the expressive potential of watercolor. Of the group, Smith enjoyed the highest reputation as a colorist and here applied warm washes to delineate steep stone cliffs bordering the approach to the so-called Grotto, and deeper tones to describe indentations left by quarriers. He also describes a memorial plaque in the left foreground.
