Wine jar (Orcio da vino) ca. 1597-1620 workshop of the Marmi family The only known examples of Montelupo ware with monochrome blue decoration on a near-white ground. That combination recalls the porcelain that had been the pride of Grand Duke Francesco I de Medici in Florence. Bernardo Buontalenti was in charge of that enterprise. These large jars, therefore, represent a prolongation of that local tradition, even though the material, size, and style differ. The latter can be associated with Buontalentis principal pupil, Giulio Parigi, who also worked for the Medici. . When the multi-coloured Japanese porcelain first appeared on the Dutch market, it created quite a stir. The finest porcelain came from the Kakiemon workshop, which produced porcelain for the top end of the Japanese and European markets. While the decorations on this vase look very Japanese, they are nevertheless adapted to European taste. The motifs are much more symmetrical than was customary in Japan.
