The operator seated in the centre is looking through the inspection window of the upper arm of the Lithgow pressure tunnel. The original caption states that 'the water in that section of the circulatory system is in motion at a controlled velocity and under a controlled pressure. The propeller under test is connected to a shaft, at the other end of which is the gear shown on the left. The forces operating on the model propeller are being automatically recorded'.

Birth of a Gun- the Production of a 25 Pounder Field Gun, 1942 Sixty tons of molten steel are ready to be poured into ingot moulds at a factory producing 25 pounder field guns, somewhere in Britain. The moulds are about 6ft high and 24 inches square at the base. They taper near the bottom so that the solid ingot can be removed easily. The barrel of molten steel is designed in such a way that it can be swung for easy pouring.

The Royal Navy during the Second World War In this machine, commonly called a 'whirler', zinc plates are given a sensitised coating. Photographic negatives are then printed down on to these plates, from which the copies of the charts are printed. The machine is being tended by Sergeant W H Baldwin, RM, of Nottingham on board HMS WHITE BEAR, a hydrographic survey vessel serving with the East Indies Fleet, at Colombo. She acts as headquarters for smaller vessels which penetrate small creeks and rivers to survey areas either uncharted or not charted for many years. The data obtained by these ships is then transformed into charts for allied shipping, with the help of a printing plant which makes HMS WHITE BEAR a floating advanced printing unit.
