Bust of a Man ca. 1745-50 Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne the Younger French The traditional identification of the sitter as the Dauphin Louis, son of Louis XV, was ruled out after a comparison with his known painted portraits. Life Mask of Abraham Lincoln 1860, cast 1886 Leonard Wells Volk In 1860 Volk made molds of the face and hands of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865). The life mask reproduces Lincolns beardless face as it appeared during his first presidential campaign. The hand (2007.185.1) grips a broomstick, a prop that Lincoln improvised upon Volks suggestion that he hold something cylindrical resembling a document. In 1886 Saint-Gaudens, the collectors Thomas B. Clarke and Erwin Davis, and the journalist Richard W. Gilder together purchased the original plaster casts to present to the Smithsonian Institution. Louis XV (1710-1774), King of France 1757 Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne the Younger French In 1730 in paris the young jean-baptiste lemoyne and his ailing father, Jean-Louis Lemoyne, signed the contract to execute a bronze equestrian statue of Louis　XV for the Place Royale at Bordeaux.1 Despite a notorious casting disaster, Jean-Baptiste brought the work to completion in 1743. He went on to execute a monument to the king in Rennes (unveiled in 1754) and the presentation model for another at Rouen (cast in 1772).2 Louis　was so well satisfied by these public celebrations of his reign that he ordered the sculptor to portray him in busts regularly, which Lemoyne did, until the kings death, in 1774. Willem van Liere was modelled post-mortem (after his death) in a stiff pose, probably derived from a painted portrait. The bust of Maria van Reygersbergh, in contrast, has all of the sensitivity and vitality of a portrait made from life’.

Anne Spencer, Countess of Sunderland (1683-1716) ca. 1710, with later socle David Le Marchand Le Marchand was a carver of the Dieppe school who transferred to London ca. 1705. He executed three nearly identical, signed busts of the sitter, perhaps for different family members. Anne Spencer, second daughter of the first Duke of Marlborough, became Countess of Sunderland after her marriage in 1700. She is noted for her great beauty and influence in politics, and between 1702 and 1712 she served as a Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Anne. This half-bust is identifiable as Anne Spencer on the basis of similarities to Godfrey Kneller's painted portrait of her, which displays an elongated rectangular face with high forehead, lightly swelled chin and slender nose.. Reliquary Bust of Saint Yrieix ca. 1220-40, with later grill French Saint Yrieix, whose skull was once contained in this reliquary, was the sixth-century founder of a monastery in the town south of Limoges that now bears his name. A special veneration of reliquaries in the form of the heads of local saints developed in the Limoges region during the Middle Ages, a devotion that continues to the present day. On feast days the image would have been carried in procession through the streets and then placed on the altar for veneration by the faithful.The silver image originally covered a wooden core, which is exhibited nearby. Though carefully carved, it was not originally intended to be seen, but to give shape to and to provide support for the precious metal sheathing. Once the skull was set in place this wooden core, though sensitively carved, would have been completely obscured by sheets of silver. The precious material evoked the saints heavenly countenance, while the skull imparted a
