Mangrove Rescue/Restoration Project. A team member from Kennedys Environmental Management Branch works to remove a mangrove seedling on the shoreline of Kennedy Athletic, Recreation, and Social (KARS) Park at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on April 12, 2023. Employees from Kennedys Environmental Management Branch removed over 100 mangrove seedlings from the shoreline and repotted them for protection during the final stages of a shoreline restoration project inside KARS Park. The mangrove seedlings will be replanted upon completion of the project to create a living shoreline better able to counter the effects of erosion caused by storm waves and rising sea levels.

BALTIMORE (Sept. 9, 2022) Religious Programs Specialist 2nd Class Joseph Mojica assists crew members from USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) collect and weigh trash at a community relations cleanup project in Masonville Cove during Maryland Fleet Week and Flyover Baltimore 2022. The Sailors and Marines collected 226 pounds of garbage from the waterfront park during the event. Maryland Fleet Week and Flyover Baltimore is the citys celebration of the sea services with this year marking the City of Baltimore's third time hosting Navy Fleet Week.

Staff with NASA, the National Park Service, Herndon Solutions Group, the centers environmental services contractor, and others, prepare to release Kemps ridley sea turtles into the Atlantic Ocean at the Canaveral National Seashore near Kennedy Space Center on Feb. 26, 2021. The rescued and rehabilitated turtles were flown from aquatic centers in Massachusetts and New York to the Launch and Landing Facility, managed by Space Florida. NASA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, NOAA Fisheries, Space Florida, and Herndon Solutions Group provided support. The Turtles Fly Too organization provided the flight to Kennedy. All marine turtle footage/images was obtained with the approval of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles. Footage was acquired while conducting authorized conservation activities pursuant to: FWC 2021 Consent Permit, MTP-21-005 and MTP-21-114.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- On a beach on NASA's Kennedy Space Center, more than 130 volunteers from the joint NASAs Kennedy Space Center and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service contract organizations give up their afternoon to gather all the “unnatural” items that had accumulated on 6.1 miles of central Florida east coast shoreline during the past 12 months. Part of the center's dedication to a clean environment, volunteers gathered enough trash to fill approximately 450 garbage bags and enough recyclable plastic and glass to fill 150 bags.

(NNS) (Oct. 5, 2022) - The U.S. Navy conducted an annual coastal cleanup on the remote beaches of San Nicolas Island (SNI), the most isolated of the California Channel Islands, located sixty-five miles offshore, and South of Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Point Mugu. The cleanup team consisted of nearly fifty volunteer Navy Sailors and civilians assigned to NBVC and Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, who removed over two-thousand pounds of trash and debris on three SNI beaches. NBVC is a strategically located Naval installation composed of three operating facilities: Point Mugu, Port Hueneme and San Nicolas Island. NBVC is the home of the Pacific Seabees, West Coast E-2C Hawkeyes, 3 warfare centers and 80 tenants.

Volunteers install oyster reef balls along the shoreline at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, Oct. 28, 2022. The project was part of a MacDill initiative to help reduce erosion and improve coastal resiliency, provide an attachment surface for oysters to grow on which will filter the water, and provide habitat for numerous species of fish and wildlife.

Sea Grass Restoration Project. Members of the Florida Oceanographic Society begin planting seagrass in the Banana River - one of three bodies of water that make up the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) - at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida on March 29, 2023. At the top right is Doug Scheidt, an ecologist working on NASAs Environmental and Medical Contract at Kennedy. Kennedys Environmental Management Branch is working to plant a minimum of 28,000 shoots of seagrass divided into 18 sites across three areas at the Florida spaceport as part of a pilot project for seagrass restoration efforts. The project will look at the feasibility of replanting seagrass in Kennedy waters and, if successful, could lead to the spaceport becoming a donor site where shoots of grass can be broken off and relocated to other areas within Kennedy or along the IRL to promote growth.
