Warships in a Heavy Storm. In early 1694 some 30 Dutch warships set sail for the Mediterranean. They were sent to protect a merchantfleet from French attacks. In the Straits of Gibraltar they ran into a heavy storm. Various ships sank or wereseriously damaged, including the Hollandia, portrayed centre right in the painting.

The Fishing Boat. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 25 1/2 x 32 in. (64.8 x 81.3 cm). Date: 1865.Courbet painted this work during an intensely productive visit to Trouville with James McNeill Whistler from September until November 1865; in a letter to his father, the artist boasted that he had executed "thirty-five paintings" in a very short time, which "stunned everybody." In his choice of subject, Courbet followed in the wake of Eugène Isabey, Johan Barthold Jongkind, and Eugène Boudin; but unlike many of the canvases executed at the time, this fishing boat, rigged and filled with equipment, is the focus of the composition rather than a subordinate element. View of Canton in China. During the 17th century European enterprises were refused entry into Canton. It was only in the 18th century that Europeans were permitted to establish themselves along the Pearl River. Chinese middlemen sold tea, porcelain and silk to the Westerners, who lived in isolation in their warehouses on the quay and never set foot in Canton itself.

Followed by Haarlem weavers who have abandoned their looms, blown by the wind and flying a flag emblazoned with tulips, Flora, goddess of flowers, her arms laden with tulips, rides to destruction in the sea along with drinkers, money changers and the two-faced goddess Fortuna. Tulip mania or tulipomania (Dutch names include: tulpenmanie, tulpomanie, tulpenwoede, tulpengekte and bollengekte) was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which contract prices for bulbs of the recently introduced tulip reached extraordinarily high levels and then suddenly collapsed. At the peak of tulip mania, in February 1637, some single tulip bulbs sold for more than 10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsman.

Copenhagen Harbor by Moonlight 1846 Johan Christian Dahl Since the early nineteenth-century, the waterfront ship and lumber yard depicted in this view has been known as Larsens Plads, or Larsens Place, after its founder, Lars Larsen. Dahl first painted this prospect in 1816 (Kurpfälzisches Museum, Heidelberg), but in reprising it for the present work he doubled the size of the canvas, omitting incidental details and heightening its atmospheric effect. This placid scene, conceived as the pendant to a far wilder, natural one, Tyrolean Landscape with a Waterfall (1823; private collection), remained unsold at the artists death..
