Her task is to remove all traffic barriers in the city of Amsterdam as quickly as possible, including clearance work in the port. The work also exists by clearing up the gammoners in the streets, the gaps in the road surface, caused by wooden cubes, to close: flooded cellars empty, etc. A very special task is to lighten the lifting cranes At the Javakade, which were blown up by the Germans and form a major obstacle to shipping deep in the water. Floating Docks (a) A sectional box type of floating dock, designed to lift ships up to 52 tons displacement. It is now owned by the Admiralty. The overall length is 859 ft 6 inches. The dock is electrically operated with electricity supplied from the shore and there are two electric traveling cranes. British yards have led in the construction of floating docks, and have built the majority in existence in all parts of the world. Among advantages of floating docks compared with ordinary dry docks are their mobility, which is particularly useful in time of war, since they can be moved wherever the strategic position requires.
