Cityscape. Mariss city views are not topographically accurate, which is why they were given neutral titles. He was interested above all in composition and atmosphere. The painter himself said: ‘If I feel it is necessary to interrupt the long, straight roof lines, I simply add a domed roof, especially where the sky or cloud formation calls for such support. Bluff-bowed Fishing Boat on the Beach at Scheveningen. Maris painted a bluff-bowed fishing boat at sea at least sixteen times. They are studies in light and atmosphere. To avoid the problems caused by constant- ly changing light conditions, he worked in his studio. Maris also preferred to select his colours indoors, because, as he stated, it was sometimes necessary to exaggerate in order to learn about the power of colours’.

Samuel Colman discovered the scenic beauty of the Mexican landscape for the first time in 1892a moment when it was becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination for North Americans. This view depicts the canal and "Paseo [avenue de la Viga" just outside of Mexico City, a site that suited Colman's particular interest in painting architectural forms set within sun-bleached equatorial settings. In the 1700s, the Grand Tour was a way for elite young men to learn about art and history and improve their taste. The Grand Canal, the principal waterway of Venice, winds through the city from the railway station to the Piazza San Marco, where it meets the Adriatic Sea. In this late afternoon view, Francesco Guardi portrayed a section of the canal from a vantage point looking northeast toward the Rialto bridge.
