The Man-of-War Brielle on the River Maas off Rotterdam. In 1688 this ship carried Prince William III to England to drive the Catholic King James II from power and to safeguard the Protestant faith. The Latin inscription on the red flag translates as for faith and freedom’.Bakhuysen painted this picture in 1689, the year in which William III and Mary Stuart were crowned kingand queen regnant of England.

The Deluge towards Its Close ca. 1813 Joshua Shaw American, born England Representations of the Flood, described in Genesis as the overwhelming punishment for humanitys flagrant sins, go back to the early Renaissance. In Shaws day, J. M. W. Turner and Benjamin West also painted this subject. In the Museums terrifying depiction of the darkness and desolation, painted about 1813, Shaw is indebted to Wests treatment of the theme, adopting for the foreground of his own painting Wests uprooted tree, which lies diagonally on the earth, surrounded by the ghastly bodies of the drowned, and festooned with the limp carcass of a gigantic snake. West seems not to have minded Shaws borrowing and wrote to him in high praise of this powerfully romantic and emotional picture. Joshua Shaw was an English artist who was forty when he came to this country, four years after painting "The Deluge". Watson and the Shark ca. 1778 John Singleton Copley American Copley painted this rapid study for "Watson and the Shark" from his first rendering of the iconic worknow in the National Gallery of Art, Washingtonin preparation for successive versions, found in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. It depicts the future Lord Mayor of London, Brook Watson, who, as a teenager, lost his leg to a shark while swimming in Havana harbor in 1749. A Black sailor forms the apex of the composition, holding a rope for the victim who later famously defended the slave trade in the West Indies. Joseph Mallord William Turner (1785-1851) was a British Romantic, landscape painter, water colorist, and printmaker. It is said that his style lay the foundation for the movement known as Impressionism. His paintings number in the thousands. Among his best-known works are A Ship Aground, Arth from the Lake of Zug, and Lausanne. This painting, titled The Fighting Temeraire, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1839. The previous year, Turner and friends were bound for Greenwich by water They passed a steam-tug towing a superannuated battleship. "That's a fine subject for you, Turner," said Stanfield. The painter took the hint, and produced "The Fighting Temeraire tugged to her last Berth to be broken up.".

The Dutch East India Company, or VOC, was a chartered company granted a monopoly by the Dutch government to carry out colonial activities in Asia. It was the first multinational corporation in the world and the first company to issue stock. It was also arguably the world's first megacorporation, possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, imprison and execute convicts, negotiate treaties, coin money and establish colonies. The VOC was set up in 1602 to gain a foothold in the East Indies (Indonesia) for the Dutch in the lucrative spice trade, which until that point was dominated by the Portuguese. Between 1602 and 1796, the VOC sent almost a million Europeans to work in the Asia trade on 4,785 ships, and netted more than 2.5 million tons of Asian trade goods.
