ISS009E20442 (27 August 2004) --- This photo of Hurricane Frances was taken by Astronaut Mike Fincke aboard the International Space Station as he flew 230 statute miles above the storm at about 9 a.m. CDT Friday, Aug. 27, 2004. At the time, Frances was located 820 miles east of the Lesser Antilles in the Atlantic Ocean, moving west-northwest at 10 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour. Fincke, the NASA ISS Science Officer and Flight Engineer, and Expedition 9 Commander Gennady Padalka are in the fifth month of a six-month flight aboard the Station.

A scheduled, unarmed operational test of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile launch occurred Sept. 17, 2010, from Launch Facility-09 at Vandenberg AFB. The missile's single reentry test vehicle traveled approximately 5,300 miles to a pre-determined target about 200 miles southwest of Guam. ICBM analysts, including officials from the DoD and the Department of Energy, will use the data collected to ensure the readiness and capability of the ICBM fleet.

Dark blue in this filter combination is usually basalt sand. The THEMIS VIS camera is capable of capturing color images of the Martian surface using five different color filters. In this mode of operation, the spatial resolution and coverage of the image must be reduced to accommodate the additional data volume produced from using multiple filters. To make a color image, three of the five filter images (each in grayscale) are selected. Each is contrast enhanced and then converted to a red, green, or blue intensity image. STS075-360-021 (22 Feb.- 9 March 1996) --- The loose tether forms a faint diagonal line in this scene recorded on a later fly-by. On Feb. 25, 1996, the crew deployed the Tethered Satellite System (TSS), which later broke free. The seven member crew was launched aboard the space shuttle Columbia on Feb. 22, 1996, and landed on March 9, 1996. Crew members were Andrew M. Allen, mission commander; Scott J. Horowitz, pilot; Franklin R. Chang-Diaz, payload commander; and Maurizio Cheli, European Space Agency (ESA); Jeffrey A. Hoffman and Claude Nicollier, ESA, all mission specialists; along with payload specialist Umberto Guidoni of the Italian Space Agency (ASI).

iss052e011185 (7/7/2017) --- A view taken of CubeSats from Japan, Ghana, Mongolia, Bangladesh and Nigeria deployed from the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Satellite Orbital Deployer 7 (J-SSOD 7) (with Earth visible in the background). These satellites are part of the Joint Global Multi-Nation Birds Satellite project (BIRDS-1), a cross-border interdisciplinary satellite project for non-space faring countries supported by Japan. During this 2-year project, students from the Graduate School of Engineering of the Kyushu Institute of Technology design, develop and operate CubeSats belonging to the five participating countries.
