Salt-Mine Preserved Them Too Well -- With the aid of a magnifying glass and a sharp knife Jacob Kohnert carefully removes the bindings from salteencrusted books. Each page is then soaked separately.Berlin: When, during the heavy Allied air attacks, Berlin city authorities hastened to protect their most valuable books by storing them in mines of the Harz Mountains, they didn't reckon on the books being preserved - in salt.In the turmoil following the end of the war, the books were forgotten and when re-discovered recently were thickly encrusted with salt. Preparing For Empire's South Pole Expedition -- Today's picture of Dr. Vivian Fuchs, the 54-years-old Scientific Director of the Falkand Island Dependencies, who has been appointed leader of the great new Expending which will set out late his year to explore Antarctica. Men for the Commonwealth will be invited to join the Expedition which aims at making the first addressing of Antarctica from Vahsel Bay to McMurdo Sound. The actual South Pole Party will consist of about 12 men capable of carrying out two or three consist of about 12men capable of jobs, and it is expected that valuable information will be gained. Reginald Evelyn Peter Southouse-Cheyney (22 February 1896 - 26 June 1951), known as Peter Cheyney, was a British crime fiction writer who flourished between 1936 and 1951. Cheyney is perhaps best known for his short stories and novels about agent/detective Lemmy Caution. Another popular creation was the private detective Slim Callaghan who also appeared in a series of novels and subsequent film adaptations.
