The image of the Virgin on a crescent moon reflects the vision of Saint John (Apocalypse 12:1): a woman clothed in the sun, and the moon was under her feet.” The orb held by Christ signifies his role as spiritual ruler of the world, while the grapes in his mother’s hand symbolize the wine of the Mass.. . Maria stands forward with curved left leg and holds the tilted child slanted to the viewer, the naked child, that she supports his waist and with the left under one leg with the right hand. Maria's hair falls into spirals over shoulders and arms. She is wearing a finely pleated shirt that can be seen at neck and wrists. The keids with sleeves is closed to the right for the chest and is held together by a sash with raised bow. The cloak, to the left, is included under both arms. Between neck and hair holes on either side (for a necklace).

Their posture suggests they may have been part of Holy Kinship group with Saint Anne or of an Adoration of the Magi. The orb in his left hand symbolizes Christ's role as spiritual ruler of the world.
