A compass is a direction-finding instrument with a magnetic needle that points north (and south). Before compasses were invented, seamen navigated by observing landmarks and the stars. The magnetic compass was invented by the Chinese in about 1100 and used by Muslim navigators from about 1220.

Bow of Thai style boat

Church clock from Idbury, Oxfordshire. The remains of this clock were found in the tower of Idbury Church, close to the Gloucestershire border. It is a three-compartment frame clock and the going train (in the left-hand compartment) has a unique escapement, which was probably an 18th-century replacement for a more traditional crown wheel and foliot escapement.
