The intricate stage in the development of a new machine is when an unexpected difficulty arises. This is the time when the two veteran designers are happiest. The new salt-packing machine now under construction is capable of taking 3,000 "screws" of salt per hour. Three machines can operate from one motor giving a total amount or salt for potato crisp packets has always been a manufacturing bottleneck. Fastest hand operator can only produce 300 an hour. Ceremonial Swords for the Coronation -- Mrs. May Fry, 12 years in the business who comes from Acton. She is using a chamois leather, the last stage before packing - on military and diplomatic swords. Sword cutters are now busy making officers' ceremonial swords or refurbishing old ones in preparation for the coronation. The Wilkinson Sword company, of Acton, where these pictures were taken, still carries on this work, and at present has orders for 2,000. This is the largest order of its kind since the Coronation of 1937. At present the demand for swrods averages about 100 a week, but after the Coronation and the royal visit to Australia and New Zealand, it is expected to drop to about 50 a week. This firm has had the the ***** largely to itself. The new swords follow about a dozen different patterns. They are being made for the Household Cavelry, the Yeomen of the Guard, the R.A.F. and others. Many of the existing swords, including those belonging to the Yeomen of the Guard, are being

Bagpipes Help The "Dollar Drive" -- Harry Seeley of Tottenham inserting reeds into the stocks. on a nearly completed set of bag-pipes in Mr. Starck's factory at Camden Town (London).Mr. Henry Starck (43) is earning dollars for Britain by in hand-made sets of bagpipes from his small factory in Camden Town. Mr. Henry Starck is the third generation of his family to make bagpipes, which are all made by hand, in exactly the same way as they were when the firm started 80 years ago. The only modern introduction into the factory is an electric lathe. The Starck family first made flutes (and still do) and took to producing bagpipes when Queen Victoria appointed a Royal piper.
