Mantle ("The Paracas Textile") Nasca. Mantle ("The Paracas Textile"), 100-300 C.E. Cotton, camelid fiber, 24 5/8 × 58 11/16 in. (62.5 × 149 cm). This extraordinarily complex mantle, or cloak, is one of the most renowned Andean textiles in the world. It was most likely used as a ceremonial object. The ninety figures decorating the border, created by needle knitting, have been interpreted as a microcosm of life on Perus South Coast two thousand years ago, with a particular focus on agriculture. Many of the images illustrate native flora and fauna as well as cultivated plants. Costumed figures may represent humans impersonating gods and acting as intermediaries between the real and supernatural worlds. Severed human trophy heads are shown as germinating seeds, suggesting the practice of ritual sacrifice and the interconnected cycles of birth and death. This 1918 image illustrates the scene in the Odyssey when the Greeks grab hold of the monster Proteus. Proteus is an early prophetic sea-god or god of rivers and oceanic bodies of water. Homer, in Book IV of the Odyssey, says the sandy island of Pharos situated off the coast of the Nile Delta was the home of Proteus, the oracular Old Man of the Sea and herdsman of the sea-beasts. This 1918 image shows Chiron (Cheiron) the Centaur giving Peleus the great spear, a scene from Homers Odyssey. Chiron was a guest at the marriage of Peleus and Thetis. Chiron presented Peleus with a spear made from ash, which had been polished by Athena and given its metal point by Hephaestus. This spear would later be owned by the son of Peleus, Achilles, the Greek hero of the Trojan War.

This illustration depicts a red-figure painting on a cooling vessel and was done by Euthymides, son of Polios, around 510 B.C. Here, the legendary Greek hero Theseus is wresting with Cercyon, king of Eleusis, and has seized him round the neck and under the right armpit and is about to throw him. Theseus was regarded as the inventor of the rules of wrestling. The illustration dates to 1895.

This relief panel shows an Assyrian war chariot of ninth century B.C. The drawing is by Faucher-Gudin, from one of the bronze bas-reliefs of the gate of Balawat, and accompanied text by French Egyptologist Gaston Maspero. This bronze relief decorated the gate at the palace of the Assyrian ruler Shalmanesar III (c. 859-824 B.C.) at Balawat in present-day northern Iraq.
