Close Helmet in Maximilian Style, c. 1510-30. Germany, Nuremberg(), 16th century. Steel, brass rivets; overall: 29.2 x 34.9 x 23.5 cm (11 1/2 x 13 3/4 x 9 1/4 in.). Distinguished by its regularly fluted surfaces, armor in this style was popularized in South Germany during the early 1500s. The style is usually called "Maximilian," as it was introduced during the reign of Emperor Maximilian I (1493-1519). The style reflects male costume of the period and the shift to the new rounded forms of the Renaissance. Other examples of this armor style may be seen nearby.

Bronze helmet of South Italian-Corinthian type. Culture: Greek. Dimensions: H. 7 3/4 in. (19.7 cm)width 7 7/8 in. (20 cm)depth 10 1/2 in. (26.7 cm). Date: mid-4th-mid-3rd century B.C..These helmets represent South Italian adaptations of the Greek type known as Corinthian. The general shape is more open at the bottom, and the articulation of the face includes marked ridges above the eyes and at the "hairline." The example with the plume holder (2003.407.4) also has lightly traced ornament and the figure of a horse. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Burgonet after Filippo Negroli. Culture: Italian, Milan. Dimensions: H. 10 9/16 in. (26.8 cm); W. 9 in. (22.9 cm); D. 14 in. (35.6 cm); Wt. 3 lb. 10 oz. (1651 g). Date: 1869.This closely resembles two helmets by Filippo and Francesco Negroli in Madrid and Paris. Later over-cleaning removed the original dark surface and damascened decoration of our burgonet. Cuirass Made 1700-1750 France. At over 33 pounds, this shot-proof breastplate was nearly too heavy to wear. Surprisingly, this is about the same weight as the outer tactical vests (OTVs) used by the modern military.This well-preserved cuirass was likely produced for the elite cavalry regiment known as the Kingís Cuirassiers. The original blue surface contrasted against engraved and gilt bands to reference the French royal colors.. Steel, brass, silver-gilt bradding, silk textile, and leather .

Half Armor and Targe for Service on Foot 1585-1605 Milan. This is an unusually fine armor with matching targe (shield) for an infantry officer. On the breastplate and pauldrons of this ceremonial parade armor, the etched bands are embellished with interlace, trophies, fabulous beasts, and etched medallions that enclose classical figures reminiscent of Roman heroes. The etched radiating bands retain their original gilded surface, which contrasts effectively with adjacent areas left blackened in the forging process. Armor could be worn with costume accessories to provide a look of great ostentation, which was of paramount importance for public spectacles such as tournaments or parades. Indeed, much of armorís design and decoration was directly influenced by civilian costume. The breastplate and tassets (steel plates attached to the breastplate) of this half armor, for example, follow the lines of the garments over which they would have been worn. Breastplate (Kastenbrust) ca. 1450 German Although it was in wide use across Europe by the early fifteenth century, very little plate armor survives from that period. This breastplate is one of the earliest German examples in existence. It is almost identical to the breastplate on a statue of Emperor Friedrich III (1415-1493), dated 1453, and represents the latest innovation in German armor design and technology of the time. Armor for Heavy Cavalry with Matching Shaffron (Horse's Head Defense) ca. 1600 French One of the best-preserved French armors dating from the reign of Henry IV (1589-1610), this example demonstrates the French preference for completely gilt armors. It retains its original yellow silk helmet lining and red leather straps sewn with metallic thread. Matching this armor are a shaffron (defense for the horse's head), also in the Metropolitan Museum's collection (acc. no. 27.177.2), and a saddle, now in the Musée de l'Armée, Paris.In spite of its rich decoration, this armor was intended for use in battle. It was made at a time when the lance had been abandoned by the heavily armored cavalry in favor of a pair of pistols kept in holsters at the front of the saddle. The presence of hand firearms on the battlefield led to the increasing weight of armors such as this and the gradual discarding of elements like the defenses for the lower legs.. Elements of an Armor. Culture: German or Austrian. Dimensions: H. as mounted 35 in. (88.9 cm); Wt. 23 lb. 3 oz. (10.55 kg). Date: ca. 1480-90.Few complete armors have survived from the fifteenth century, making this one important despite its fragmentary condition. It was reportedly found in an Austrian church. The pieces were probably assembled in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century as a pious gift to be hung over the tomb of a knight. All the elements are characteristic of armor worn in central Europe and parts of western Europe in the late Gothic period. These include the separate head and neck defenses consisting of sallet and bevor, breastplate and backplate of overlapping sections, and cusped and channeled surfaces. The backplate is notable for its elegant silhouette and its fluting that imitates gathered folds of fabric. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Reinforcing Bevor and Grandguard for the Joust Made 1545-1575 Augsburg. By the sixteenth century, armorers devised this steel reinforcement as replacement for wooden shields or targes used in the joust. The lower section, known as a grandguard, was bolted down firmly over the left side of the breastplate. These served as targets and were often fitted with a trellis pattern to grapple the lance head after impact. The helmet was bolted to the upper section (bevor) for added thickness and protection, replacing the heavy jousting helm of the past.. Steel .

Burgonet ca. 1550 Italian, Milan The revival of interest in the Classical world during the Renaissance had a profound effect on the appearance of armor. Inspired by Roman examples, armor allantica (in the antique style) was worn by Italian princes and condottieri (professional soldiers) as an evocation of ancient heroes and of a glorious military heritage. Although armor in Classical fashion was known in the fifteenth century, it was not until about 1530 that armorers began to make it in embossed steel. In raising the decoration to high relief, the steel plates were worked too thin to be of protective value. As a result, embossed armor served a purely ceremonial role, leaving the armorer free to fashion it into fantastic, often whimsical forms. Filippo Negroli of Milan (about 1510-1579) seems to have been the principal innovator of this style, and contemporaries judged his works to be masterpieces of sculpture. The links are each stamped on the obverse with the names of Allah and the five leading imams of the Shi'a (i.e. Muhammad, Ali, Fatima, Hasan, and Husayn), who are also collectively known as The Five (Panj tan) or the People of the Cloak (Ahl al-Kisa).
