Portions of a Parade Armor. Culture: Italian, Milan. Dimensions: Wt. 19 lb. 6 oz. (8800 g). Date: ca. 1575.When complete, this horseman's armor would have included defenses for the arms and legs and perhaps a matching shaffron (horse's head defense) and saddle. The high-relief ornament, originally decorated with gold and silver, includes a scene of the Judgment of Paris at the top of the breastplate.Discovered in 1912 in the parish church at Aya, near San Sebastian in northern Spain, this important harness was restored in 1914 by the Metropolitan Museum's armorers, who expertly replaced the missing lower half of the visor and the collar of the helmet and most of the tassets (defenses for the upper thighs). Date: ca. 1480.The maker's mark on this helmet, a horseshoe and a crescent, is attributed to Adrian Treytz the Elder, whose family included at least five armorers who worked for the Habsburg court in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Bronze helmet of South Italian-Corinthian type mid-4th-mid-3rd century B.C. Greek These helmets represent South Italian adaptations of the Greek type known as Corinthian. The general shape is more open at the bottom, and the articulation of the face includes marked ridges above the eyes and at the "hairline." Rider helmet belonging to the armor, presumably worn by the knight Pankraz von Freyberg, Anonymous, c. 1500 - c. 1550 Rider helmet or mantle helmet with a double visor. The right side of the lower facial plate has air holes that consist of a rectangle that is crowned on both sides with a circle. In total there are 7 of such decorations. With push buttons, both visors can be kept up. The helmet has a comb. The lining is largely still present and probably nineteenth century. Kettle hat. Helmet, boiler hat, iron, black. The helmet is composed of one part with a narrow comb on top of it. The helmet has a high spherical top and a wide valve that is slightly curved at the front. Two horizontal sight holes are visible in the valve. There are various holes throughout the valve. At the inside is locked rocks.

Armor for Field and Tilt ca. 1550-75 Italian This armor garniture comes from the armory of the Dos Aguas family in Valencia, Spain. The garniture is unusually large, containing pieces for use in battle and for the tilt in both the Italian and German fashions. The tilt was a tournament fought on horseback between two opponents armed with lances and separated by a lengthwise barrier.The armor as mounted is equipped with a helmet and vambraces (arm defenses) for the tournament. The buffe (chin defense), second breastplate (acc. no. 27.159.2), and manifer (reinforced left gauntlet) (27.159.6) would have been added to make the armor ready for exchange pieces for different forms of the tournament. For the German tilt, the trellised targe (shield) (27.159.7), small elbow defense (27.159.5), and small stomach defense (27.159.3) were added. For the Italian tilt, these elements were replaced by the form-fitting reinforce covering the left half of the torso and left shoulder (mezzo sovrapetto) (2

Close Helmet ca. 1850 in the style of the mid-16th centuru French This helmet is a forgery, most likely made in the early to mid-19th century. Its embossed decoration emulates Italian or French Mannerist ornament of the mid-16th century and was probably carried out by a professional artist trained in steel chiseling techniques. The form and construction of the helmet itself, however, betrays a sufficient lack of familiarity with 16th century examples.. Close Helmet 27142

Warrior Chief, c. 1800, 11 3/4 x 7 5/16 x 4 5/8 in. (29.85 x 18.57 x 11.75 cm), Bronze, Nigeria, 18th-19th century, This bronze figure represents a warrior chief, and would have been placed on a shrine to honor an Oba, or king, accompanied by a memorial head and tusk, bells, and other ceremonial items. The figures garments and accoutrements all make reference to his status as a warrior with royal associations. He holds a shield in one hand and a ceremonial spear in the other, and the series of small bells that hang from his garment are indications of his status within the warrior class. The leopard - represented in the leopard-tooth necklace and the leopard face decorating the front of the figures garment - was an important symbol of the Benin kingship because of its power and ferociousness. Like memorial heads, this figure also wears a large coral necklace, symbolizing the wealth and power of the Oba he served.

Helmet (Suji-Kabuto) late 17th-early 18th century Japanese The bowl of this helmet is formed from one hundred individual radial iron plates, the overlapping edges of which form ridges (suji). The inscription on the frontal plate now reads jing (shrine); however, the first character is missing, and it likely originally read Daijing. This inscription may refer to the Ise Shrine, the most famous Shinto shrine in Japan, which is dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu.
