Foot-Combat Armor of Prince-Elector Christian I of Saxony (reigned 1586-91) 1591 Anton Peffenhauser German This is one of a set of twelve matching armors for use in foot combat commissioned in 1591 by Sophie of Brandenburg as a Christmas gift for her husband, Christian I (reigned 1586-91). These armors are among the last commissions of Anton Peffenhauser, the leading Augsburg armorer during the second half of the sixteenth century.Combat on foot between contestants separated by a waist-high barrier was a popular sport in European courts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It could be staged indoors or out and was fought with pikes and swords. A prescribed number of blows was allowed with each weapon. Date: ca. 1525 and later.The helmet, pauldrons (shoulder defenses), and vambraces (arm defenses) of this armor are attributed to Kolman Helmschmid based on comparison with his known works. The helmet's distinctive snub-nosed visor appears to be a form that he originated and used on three other helmets, all dating from the mid-1520s. The decoration of these elements is typical of the style of Daniel Hopfer of Augsburg (about 1470-1536), a celebrated armor-etcher and printmaker, who is known to have decorated armors made by members of the the Helmschmid family.The remainder of this armor is composed of southern German elements from about 1520 to 1530, except for minor restorations. Armor, c. 1520, 77 x 31 1/2in. (195.6 x 80cm), Steel, leather, copper alloy (composite; early 20th century restorations), Germany, 16th century, A suit of armor says a lot about the state of warfare and fashion at the time of its creation. As arms makers devised increasingly deadly weapons like the mace and the crossbow, armorers produced armor equal to the latest threat, yet also stylish. In the 1500s, military strategy emphasized the cavalry charge with lance, followed by hand-to-hand combat with sword and shield. A lance rest installed on the breastplate kept the lance from sliding backward and helped diffuse the shock if the lance hit home. The rounded shape of the breastplate and helmet caused blows from a sword or lance to glance off. The breastplates belted form and the ropelike edges of breastplate and gauntlets followed contemporary mens fashion, showing the owner to be a man of taste and means.

Armor of Giovanni Battista Bourbon del Monte (1541-1614) ca. 1590 Italian, possibly Brescia Del Monte (1541-1614) was a mercenary soldier who at various times served the emperor, the pope, the kings of Spain and France, and the Venetian Republic. This armor dates from the period of del Montes service to Venice as captain-general of infantry. It probably was made in Brescia, an armor-making center then under Venetian control.The armor is notable for its elegantly pointed helmet with a steel plume and for the etched and gilt decoration in imitation of a textile pattern. Overall decoration of this kind was especially fashionable in the period from 1590 to 1610.A portrait of del Monte in the Museo Stibbert, Florence, shows this armor with its shoulder pieces, arms and gauntlets, now missing.Two glaives bearing the del Monte coat of arms are also in the Metropolitan Museum's collection (acc. nos. 04.3.88, .89).
