Closed Burgundian storm hat with rare bizier, anonymous, c. 1800 - c. 1900 Closed Burgundian storm hat with a grille and helmet valve. Probably a nineteenth century variant of a seventeenth century storm hat or a compound storm hat. The grille bizier on the hinged Kinplaat is not authentic and incorrectly confirmed. What is now the underside of the visor was the top in the seventeenth century. The front half of the ring collar is missing.

Sallet ca. 1510-20 Attributed to Pietro Giacomo da Castello Italian This type of sallet, with an open face and a long swept tail, was widely used by infantrymen in Italy. Half Armor 1610-20 Attributed to Martin Schneider the Younger German Although made in Nuremberg, this cavalrymans armor is an unusual mix of different regional styles. The helmet is based on an eastern European type known as the Zischägge, which was inspired by Turkish examples. The pauldrons (shoulder defenses) with their overlapping, fanlike plates are of a type associated with Swiss armors of the period.The armor is stamped with the Nuremberg mark and an armorers mark—a shield containing the letters MSI above a pair of shears—that has been attributed to Martin Schneider the Younger.Despite its relative plainness, the armor is very well made. It would have been worn by a cavalryman equipped with a sword, a pair of pistols, and possibly a carbine (a short form of musket).. Half Armor 22251

Falling Buffe. Armorer: Attributed to Kolman Helmschmid (German, Augsburg 1471-1532). Culture: German, Augsburg. Dimensions: H. 10 in. (25.4 cm); W. 8 1/2 in. (21.6 cm). Date: ca. 1525.This type of face defense is called a falling buffe because its segments can be collapsed downward to allow for easier breathing and greater visability, or locked in an upright position to fully protect the face. It was probably made by the celebrated Augsburg armorer Kolman Helmschmid in about 1525 and is very similar in form and decoration to another helmet in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, also attributed to Helmschmid, which is a type known as a closed burgonet (accession number 27.159.18). Both that helmet and this buffe came from the armory of the Dos Aguas family in Valencia, Spain. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Armet with Mask Visor ca. 1520-25 German, Nuremberg or Austrian, Innsbruck Helmets fitted with masklike visors were a popular German fashion about 1510 to 1540. Visors forged as humorous or grotesque human masks were often worn in tournaments held during the exuberant pre-Lenten (Shrovetide) festivals, celebrations somewhat akin to modern Mardi Gras. The deep cuts on the left side of this example suggest that it was used in a mock battle, or tourney, fought by groups of horsemen armed with lances and swords. The helmet's powerful sculptural form, technical accomplishment, and imaginitive conception demonstrate the armorer's virtuosity.. Armet with Mask Visor. War Hat late 15th century Spanish Little is known about armor-making in Spain, and the majority of securely identifiable Spanish examples date from the late fifteenth century. War hats of this type, with either round or pointed bowls and deeply sloped brims, are uniquely Spanish and are frequently decorated with applied bands of gilt copper around the base of the bowl and the edge of the brim. This helmet has lost these appliqués, for which only rivet holes (now filled with modern copper rivets) remain. Struck three times on the right side at the back is an armorer's mark: a crowned letter. The front of the bowl is filled with a brow plate covered on its outer face with red textile, possibly part of the original lining.. War Hat. Spanish. late 15th century. Steel, brass. Helmets

"Waistcoat" Cuirass (Combined Breast and Backplates), c. 1580. North Italy, 16th century. Steel; brass rivets simulating buttons; overall: 47.6 x 29.6 x 25.7 cm (18 3/4 x 11 5/8 x 10 1/8 in.). This cuirass is a specialized type of costume armor. In addition to protecting its owner's torso, it was clearly intended to simulate a civilian jacket, or doublet, with a row of buttons down the front. The owner would have opened it like an ordinary doublet since the two halves are hinged to a narrow backplate.

Garniture for Field and Foot Tourney at the Barriers Made 1560-1580 Milan. Chivalryówith its connotation of the knightly idealówas intimately connected with the horse (cheval in French). A knight took care to protect his mount, on which he was dependent for the mobility and speed required in both attack and retreat. In Roman times, some heavy cavalry used armor made of iron or bronze scales to protect their horses. From the twelth century on, knights covered their steeds in bands of iron mail (a network of interlocking rings). By the fifteenth century, full-plate armors were not uncommon. This shaffron, or headpiece, is etched in gilt bands with decoration on a finely dotted ground. Riveted between the eyes is an elongated conical spike, perhaps inspired by the horn of the mythical unicorn. A manifestation of great power and wealth, the shaffron has been valued for centuries as an object of beauty, not just as a tool of warfare and sport.. Steel with gilding, brass, and leather .

Bronze helmet of Corinthian type late 6th century B.C. Greek The most characteristic Greek helmet is that of Corinthian type. It is distinguished by the cutouts for the eyes, the narrow nose piece, and the small opening for the lips and chin. The holes around the edges are for the attachment of a lining. It began to be used about 700 B.C., and there is significant evidence to substantiate its origin in Corinth. This type of helmet evolved in shape and was executed with great artistry.. Waistcoat Cuirass Made 1565-1580 Milan. During the last quarter of the sixteenth century, infantry and naval officers began to wear artfully designed cuirasses (breast and backplates) that hinged open with a front seam that mimicked the doublet or waistcoat. This Italian example is decorated with slanted etched bands to look like embroidered trim as well as large rivets down the front simulating buttons. Despite its fashionable appeal, the front seam did weaken the cuirass, and soon after 1600 the fashion vanished.. Steel .

Tasset (proper left), c. 1560-1580. South Germany, 16th century. Steel, leather straps, brass rivets; overall: 28 x 22.6 cm (11 x 8 7/8 in.). This armor was developed for the joust-a sporting combat between two mounted contestants. Although all of the elements of this armor date from the same period, they are not all from the same suit. This armor is thus called "composed." It also shows the asymmetry of jousting armor. The participants rode along a wall-like barrier known as a "tilt" with their left sides facing one another. Consequently, armor on that side of the body had to be thicker. Note the large plate (grandguard) over the left shoulder for extra protection. Also, the breathing holes in the helmet were placed on the right side (farthest from an opponent's lance) to avoid injuries from splinters. The bracket attached to the right breastplate is called the lance-rest, a shock-absorbing support designed to accommodate the lance when "couched" under the right armpit.

Zischägge (Helmet) Made 1610-1640 Flanders. This helmet, known as a Zischgge in Germany or a lobster-tailed pot in England, was the principle headpiece for light cavalry. With its sliding nasal bar, brim, earflaps, and neck guard, the design offered protection from sword cuts with optimal peripheral vision.The design was adapted from Turkish helmets of the 16th century. The style spread to Hungary and Poland and by the mid-17th century was found throughout Europe. This Flemish example comes from the armory of a Spanish noble family.. Cor Solo 1829 Dubois et Couturier French Cors solo, a French invention, are horns built specifically for the use of soloists. They not only are extremely carefully crafted but also have a slightly narrower bore than regular orchestral French horns. Only a few shops, most of them in Lyon and Paris, were able to build excellent, easy-speaking cors solo with refined workmanship and balanced sound qualities. This cor solo, dated 1829, is the earliest known instrument made by Dubois & Couturier, a firm that flourished in Lyon in the 1830s. The style of the ferrules and stays between the sections of tubing was very modern for the time and became generally accepted only in the 1850s. Because in the early nineteenth century literally all solo literature for cors solo was composed in the keys of G, F, E, and E-flat, the horns were built with exchangeable loops just for those keys.This instrument has been used very little. Date: 600-900.Heavy woolen garments such as the example seen here were generally worn as a top layer over a lighter tunic, and hoods offered added protection against heat, cold, or dust. This green wool garment is one of a number of hooded children's tunics that have been preserved. It is ornamented with plain, undyed bands, while its clavi and double sleeve bands are made of purple-colored and undyed wool. The clavi and bands are decorated with a repeating pattern of abstracted, elongated figures intertwined in a vine scroll; they are framed by festoons and dangling leaves. The hemline of the tunic is edged with green fringe. A separately woven hood, also decorated with undyed bands and two roundels, is finished with green fringe along the top and red fringe along the sides. Museum: Metropo
