The Visitation, from a Book of Hours 1440-1445 Flanders. Books of Hours were the most popular book of the Middle Ages and Renaissance; more of them were produced from c. 1250ñ1550 than any other type of book, devotional or otherwise. This example has been attributed to the workshop of the prolific Master of the Ghent Privileges, and characteristically ornaments a sequence of prayers and devotional reading to be recited at precisely set times of the day and night. Images such as this tender scene of the encounter between the Virgin and her cousin Saint Elizabeth, both miraculously with child, helped introduce the different segments of the Hours of the Virgin, the core section of all Books of Hours.. Leaf Excised from a Psalter: The Pentecost, c. 1260. Flanders, Liège(), 13th century. Tempera and burnished gold on vellum; sheet: 12.5 x 8.4 cm (4 15/16 x 3 5/16 in.). Traditional locations within manuscript psalters were designated by decorated initials or, as is the case here, full-page miniatures. These locations marked the major divisions of the psalms as used in the daily office. The extraordinary quality of these miniatures suggests they once decorated a deluxe psalter made for a wealthy or aristocratic patron, possibly a cleric.

Textile with Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata late 14th century Italian According to his biographers, Saint Francis of Assisi enjoyed all the comforts of wealth and position until he heard Christ calling to him as he prayed. He then promptly renounced his possessions and devoted the rest of his life to poverty, charity, and veneration. This textile illustrates a pivotal moment in the saints life: while kneeling in prayer on a mountain at La Verna, he saw a vision of a seraph, a six-winged angel, on a cross and found he had received the stigmata, the five wounds of Christ, in his hands, feet, and side. The moment marks the fulfillment of Saint Francis aspiration to imitate Christ himself in compassion and service to others.The textile depicts the saint in an active pose, with his hands outstretched and his gaze turned up to the seraph. Initial E from a Municipal Law Book: The Last Judgment, c. 1330. Germany, Regensburg. Ink, tempera, and gold on parchment; sheet: 21.3 x 18.2 cm (8 3/8 x 7 3/16 in.). This initial E serves as a frame for the figure of Christ, shown here as the judge of the world with the swords of justice emanating from his mouth. Above, two angels emerge from the heavenly realm to announce the final judgment of humankind, while below, the dead rise from their graves. The image provides a visual message of justice, retribution, and accountability, and shows the connection between secular and religious themes during the Middle Ages. Regensburg on the Danube, one of the most important cities in southern Germany in the Middle Ages, was also affected by the plague, although little is known about it from written sources.

Saint Reparata before the Emperor Decius ca. 1338-40 Bernardo Daddi Italian Brought before the Roman Emperor Decius (ruled 249-51 A.D.), the young Palestinian Christian Reparata refuses to make sacrifices to the Roman pantheon of gods, offering instead to burn herself as a sacrifice to Christ. In other episodes of this narrative sequence (not on view), she is shown tortured and then beheaded.
