Date: December 1499.This exquisite book, a complex tale of love and antiquarianism and a prime document of the Renaissance rediscovery of classical antiquity, was produced by the important Venetian publisher Aldus Manutius (ca. 1450-1515). A specialist in the publication of Greek texts, Aldus was also famous for developing new formats, such as the small, handheld book, and new typefaces, such as the italic, the descendants of which are still in use today. The typeface used in the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, based on ancient Roman inscriptions, was created by Aldus' type designer Francesco Griffo of Bolog

This colored woodcut by Thomas Ochsenbrunner, created in 1494, depicts the Capitoline oak with Romulus, showing figures and symbolic elements in a historical composition.

Image of Death (Imago Mortis), from the Nuremberg Chronicle 1488-1498 Germany. This brightly colored leaf from The Nuremberg Chronicle shows five cheerful skeletons and decaying cadavers dancing, playing music, and emerging from a grave. One tosses its bluish entrails about like a dress train, while others rattle dry bones. Fingerprints appear on the right side of this evidently well-thumbed page. A user also bracketed the text below that begins, ìNothing is better than death,î underscoring the importance of the memento mori (Remember you must die) message offered by the work. Origin of Cunegonde from Luxembourg, Michel Wolgemut (workshop of), 1493 print Family tree about the origin of Cunegonde of Luxembourg. She married King Henry II of Germany, became Empress of the Holy Roman Empire. After his death, she withdrew to an abbey. The pedigree is made up of carrots with flower skins. In the middle the father of Cunegunde, called Siegfried van Luxembourg. He would be through a descendant of Charlemagne.
