Ganymede's Varied Terrain

Dune fields in the high southern latitudes of Mars tell a mostly similar story during local summer. The dark dunes grow warmer than the surrounding bright plains because they absorb more sunlight. Dust devils form over the warm dunes but then dance out over the plains, spinning and performing pirouettes and leaving conspicuous dark tracks as bright dust is lifted from the surface. Loops in the tracks can often be used to discern the direction traveled by the dust devils, where in some cases, one track clearly overprints the other.

This image is a still frame, created from images taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft, shows white oval storms in Jupiter's southern hemisphere that rotate counterclockwise, similar to the larger Great Red Spot.

This observation from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show it is late summer in the Southern hemisphere, so the Sun is low in the sky and subtle topography is accentuated in orbital images. We see many shallow pits in the bright residual cap of carbon dioxide ice (also called Swiss cheese terrain ). There is also a deeper, circular formation that penetrates through the ice and dust. This might be an impact crater or it could be a collapse pit.

In this image, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) observes an impact crater with associated bright deposits that at first glance give the appearance of seasonal frost or ice accumulations. MRO has an onboard spectrometer called CRISM that can distinguish between ices and other minerals. Unfortunately, there is currently no coverage of this particular spot. However, it can be deduced through several lines of evidence that this is, in fact, not ice. Just like Earth, Mars experiences seasons that change as the planet orbits the Sun. Seasonal changes are most apparent at the higher latitudes. As these regions in each hemisphere enter their respective summer seasons, the Sun rises higher in the Martian sky causing frost and ice to sublimate, and illuminate more features across the landscape. As the high latitudes of each hemisphere move toward their respective winters, the days (called sols ) grow shorter and the sun hangs low on the horizon, giving rise to prolonged periods of cold,

The ultimate origin of the sediment that forms Martian dunes has long been debated. While sand dunes on Earth are primarily sourced by quartz-bearing components of granitic continental crust, it's often suggested that sand on Mars derives from eroded volcanic flows or sedimentary deposits, but exact sources are often vague. This image reveals a unique situation where this small dune field occurs along the summit of the large 1-mile-tall mound near the center of Juventae Chasma. The layered mound slopes are far too steep for dunes to climb, and bedform sand is unlikely to come from purely airborne material. Instead, the mound's summit displays several dark-toned, mantled deposits that are adjacent to the dunes and appear to be eroding into fans of sandy material. Along with local HiRISE images, spectral data from other instruments on MRO have confirmed such units are likely to be the sand source for these mound summit dunes and reveal how landscape evolution on Mars might occur. AS08-14-2432 (21-27 Dec. 1968) --- This is a near vertical photograph of the lunar surface taken with a telephoto lens during the Apollo 8 lunar orbit mission. The photographed area is approximately 20 miles on a side and is located within a large, unmanned 100-miles-in-diameter crater on the farside of the moon. This large crater is located at 10 degrees south latitude and 160 degrees east longitude. The lunar surface probably has less pronounced color then indicated by this print.

This image shows two types of sand dunes on Mars. The small dots are called barchan dunes, and from their shape we can tell that they are upwind. The downwind dunes are long and linear. These two types of dune each show the wind direction in different ways the barchans have a steep slope and crescent-shaped horns that point downwind, while the linear dunes are stretched out along the primary wind direction. Linear dunes, however, typically indicate a wind regime with at least two different prevailing winds, which stretch out the sand along their average direction. In several places in this image, you can find barchan dunes turning into linear dunes as they are stretched out, but they both seem into indicate the same wind direction.

ISS016-E-023196 (15 Jan. 2008) --- A portion of Mega-iceberg A53a in the South Atlantic Ocean is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 16 crewmember on the International Space Station. At the time this image was taken in mid-January 2008, the entire iceberg measured close to 50 kilometers x 22 kilometers, about seven times the area of Manhattan Island. Icebergs of the Southern Atlantic Ocean contain rock material from Antarctica, eroded by the moving ice and also as wind-borne dust from deserts in Africa, South America and Australia. According to NASA scientists, the finest powdery rock material acts as nutrient for sea organisms. As icebergs melt, the surrounding seawater is enriched. The area of enrichment is significantly enlarged when a mega-iceberg disintegrates into many small pieces.

Strong offshore winds, probably associated with katabatic winds from the interior of the continent, are peeling off the edges of the ice shelf into ribbons of sea ice, icebergs, bergy bits and growlers into the cold waters of the circum-Antarctic southern ocean.

This image shows spidery channels eroded into Martian ground. It is an example from high-resolution observation of more than 20 places that were chosen in 2016 on the basis of about 10,000 volunteers' examination of lower-resolution images of larger areas near Mars' south pole. These sharper looks use the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The volunteers, through the Planet Four Terrains website, categorize surface features in images from the same orbiter's Context Camera (CTX). This image is a portion of HiRISE observation ESP_047487_1005, taken on Sept. 12, 2016, of a site at 79.4 degrees south latitude, 18.8 degrees east longitude. Olympia Undae is a large field of sand dunes surrounding Mars' North Polar ice cap. High latitude covers them with water and carbon dioxide frost in the winter so they are illuminated. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter views these best in summer.

On the border between Mongolia and China, southward draining ephemeral streams have carved a series of parallel channels. Mountains to the north have an elevation of 1800 m; the catchment lake for the streams lies at 500 m elevation. The flat, featureless, homogeneous plain between the source and sink controls the geometry of the drainage pattern. The image was acquired August 17, 2014, covers an area of 17.7 by 36.3 kilometers, and is located at 42.7 degrees north, 100.9 degrees east.
