This photomicrograph of an unstained specimen revealed the presence of an Entamoeba histolytica parasite in its cystic stage, which contained a blunt-tipped chromatoid body. Mature E. histolytica cysts contain four nuclei that characteristically have centrally located karyosomes and thin, evenly distributed peripheral chromatin. The cysts usually measure 12 to 15 m. Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. Light micrograph of budding cells of the fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. This fungus, (formerly called Blastomyces brasiliensis), is the cause of paracoccidioidomycosis. It can infect the skin and mucous membranes, causing lesions and ulcers, or the internal organs.

Obtained from an eye specimen taken from a patient in Thailand, who had contracted an infection known as Acanthamoeba keratitis, this specimen was cultured on a fibroblast tissue culture agar plate. NIAMS scientists found evidence that high numbers of osteoclasts, a type of cell that breaks down bone, may contribute to bone loss in people with spondyloarthritis. Osteoclasts, like the one shown here in the center, contain multiple nuclei (light circles) because they are formed by fusion of precursor cells.

Many Arthroderma spp. of fungi are coprophilous, or dung-inhabiting, and are commonly associated with vertebrates (including human) as skin parasites, living off discarded skin fragments, hair or feathers.

Radiation can make the cells cancerous, thus allowing better comparisons of healthy vs. tunorous tissue.

Acanthamoeba is a microscopic, free-living amoeba, or amoeba (single-celled living organism), that can cause rare but serious eye, skin, and central nervous system infections. The amoeba is found worldwide in the environment in water and soil. The amoeba can spread to the eyes through the use of contact lenses, cuts or wounds in the skin, or by being inhaled into the lungs. Most people will be exposed to Acanthamoeba in their lifetime, but very few will become ill from this exposure
