This Giemsa-stained micrograph shows a Trypanosoma cruzi protozoan parasite during its leishmanial stage of development. T. cruzi, causes Chagas disease, a zoonotic disease that can be transmitted to humans by blood-sucking triatomine bugs. Here, the protozoa were cultured in a laboratory setting using a HeLa cell, S-3 culture.

Researchers are examining how earthbound preventions for renal stone formation work in flight, ensuring missions are not ended prematurely due to this medical condition. Under 1125X magnification, this photomicrograph revealed the presence of a parasitic trophozoite, Entamoeba coli. The trophozoites of E. coli usually measure 15 m to 50 m. Each trophozoite has a nucleus with a characteristically large, eccentrically located karyosome and coarse, irregular chromatin located at the periphery. The cytoplasm is coarse and vacuolated, and is called dirty cytoplasm. CDC 1971
