The Apollo 13 astronauts are seen egressing their spacecraft during recovery operations in the South Pacific on April 17, 1970. John L. Swigert Jr. (back to camera), Command Module (CM) pilot, is already in the life raft. Fred W. Haise Jr., lunar module pilot, facing camera, is stepping into the raft. James A. The three crewmembers were picked up by helicopter and flown to the prime recovery ship, USS Iwo Jima. The Apollo 13 craft and crew launched on April 11, 1970, but when an oxygen tank exploded two days later rendering the Service Module ineffective, the mission was aborted. NASA followed this mission with Apollo 14 in January 1971, which saw a successful Moon landing and safe return of its crew.

International Ice Patrol - 1948. This Coast Guard Officer aboard a converted B-17 on International Ice Patrol performs a very necessary operation as he takes a sun-sight with the sextant to determine the exact position of the plane. Coast Guard planes patrol the iceberg areas for from 8 to 10 hours each day without seeing land or any fixed markers. Radio contact is maintained between plane and cutter, bergs sighted by plane are investigated by the cutter and all findings reported to the International Ice Patrol Office at Argentia. Combined air and surface operations and the effective use of radar and loran by Coast Guard patrol units contributed to the success of the 1948 International Ice Patrol. It was the mission of the 1948 patrol to locate and report ice conditions constituting a menace to navigation, to determine set and drift of icebergs, to collect weather information and surface and sub-surface oceanographic data, and to keep all interested parties and commercial shipping info

The ROKs Have a Fighting Navy -- ROK Navy ships patrol close enough to shore to make effective use of machine guns against land targets. Their machine guns are equally effective against aircraft or surface craft.The Republic of Korea has a Navy of approximately 50 ships and ten thousand officers and men. Whatever the ROKs lack in numbers they more than make up for in fighting spirit. To the ROKs falls the lion's share of the close inshore patrol and blockade of the long Korean coastline, a job that calls for their shallow draft craft and their aggressive sailors. Air Force F-84 Thunderjet along the runway to conserve fuel, before the aircraft took off Friday on a history-making non-stop flight was the first by jet fighter bombers, and the first to use in-flight refueling, on the 2,500-mile flight between Japan and Thailand.
