JSC2002-E-27067 (1 July 2002) --- Astronaut Sandra H. Magnus prepares for the STS-112 mission by participating in a hardware-moving simulation. The mission specialist rehearses setting up work for assigned space-walking crewmates in the nearby giant pool of the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) at the Sonny Carter Training Facility. Magnus and Expedition Five flight engineer Peggy A. Whitson (already aboard the orbital outpost when this training took place) will be operating the controls of the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS or Canadarm2) during the mission's task of installing the station's S-1 truss. Astronauts David A. Wolf and Piers J. Sellers, who would be suited up and standing by in the airlock during this activity, will follow Magnus' set-up work with a space walk.

A Canadian handshake in space occurred on April 28, 2001, as the Canadian-built space station robotic arm (Canadarm2) transferred its launch cradle over to Endeavour's robotic arm. Marning the controls from the shuttle's aft flight deck, Canadian Mission Specialist Chris A. Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) was instrumental in the activity. NASA James Webb Space Telescope Project Manager Bill Ochs monitors the progress of the observatorys second primary mirror wing as it rotates into position, Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022, from NASAs James Webb Space Telescope Mission Operations Center at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. Since its arrival in 2004, the Cassini-Huygens mission has been a discovery machine, revolutionizing our knowledge of the Saturn system and captivating us with data and images never before obtained with such detail and clarity. On Sept. 15, 2017, operators deliberately plunged the spacecraft into Saturn, as Cassini gathered science until the end. Loss of contact with the Cassini spacecraft occurred at 7:55 a.m. EDT (4:55 a.m. PDT). The plunge” ensures Saturn’s moons will remain pristine for future exploration. During Cassini’s final days, mission team members from all around the world gathered at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, to celebrate the achievements of this historic mission.

Engineers at NASAs Kennedy Space Center monitor the Mass Spectrometer observing lunar operations (MSolo) instrument as it undergoes vibration testing inside the Florida spaceports Cryogenics Laboratory on Aug. 3, 2022. MSolo is a commercial off-the-shelf mass spectrometer modified to work in space and will help analyze the chemical makeup of landing sites on the Moon, as well as study water on the lunar surface. Researchers and engineers are preparing MSolo instruments to launch on four robotic missions as part of NASAs Commercial Lunar Payload Services - commercial deliveries beginning in 2023 that will perform science experiments, test technologies, and demonstrate capabilities to help NASA explore the Moon and prepare for crewed missions to the lunar surface.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Space Shuttle launch director Michael Leinbach (right) and assistant launch director Doug Lyons support an External Tank (ET) tanking test at Launch Pad 39B from the Launch Control Center. The tanking test is designed to evaluate how the tank, orbiter, solid rocket boosters and ground systems perform under 'cryo-load,' when the tank is filled with the two ultra-low-temperature propellants. The tank filling and draining portion of the test takes about 11 hours. The test also includes a simulated countdown through the hold at T-31 seconds. The test is being conducted to troubleshoot two issues identified by a tanking test held on April 14. Data is being collected to analyze the liquid hydrogen sensors that gave intermittent readings and the liquid hydrogen pressurization relief valve that cycled more times than standard.
