CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Workers secure the radome to the top of a new Doppler weather radar tower being built in an area near S.R. 520 in Orange County, Fla. The dome houses the weather radar dish and pedestal and protects them from the elements. The new tower will replace one at nearby Patrick Air Force Base and will be used by NASA's Kennedy Space Center, the 45th Space Wing and their customers. The tower will be able to monitor weather conditions directly above the launch pads at Kennedy. The weather radar is essential in issuing lightning and other severe weather warnings and vital in evaluating lightning launch commit criteria. The new radar, replacing what was installed 25 years ago, includes Doppler capability to detect winds and identify the type, size and number of precipitation particles. The site is ideally distant from the launch pads and has unobstructed views of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Kennedy.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District manages the construction work at Montgomery, currently in the preconstruction phase. The current phase helps prepare the worksite for an upcoming multi-year construction project. Montgomery is part of the Upper Ohio Navigation Project, which has received $857.7 million in dedicated funding through the 2022 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The project will include replacing the facilitys 360-foot auxiliary chamber with a wider and longer 600-foot chamber that can fit up to nine barges at once. The district expects to begin work on the new lock construction in 2024, which will last at least eight years to complete.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Modifications continue on the Mobile Launcher, or ML, at the Mobile Launcher Park Site at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Construction workers on lifts perform welding work on the exterior of the ML.In 2013, the agency awarded a contract to J.P. Donovan Construction Inc. of Rockledge, Fla., to modify the ML, which is one of the key elements of ground support equipment that is being upgraded by the Ground Systems Development and Operations Program office at Kennedy. The ML will carry the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft to Launch Pad 39B for its first mission, Exploration Mission 1, in 2017.

On July 15, Deputy Commanding General Heitkamp visited the Pittsburgh District to tour the construction work at Charleroi Locks and Dam 4 in Belle Vernon, PA. The construction work is part of the Lower Monongahela River project, which will replace the nearly 100-year-old fixed-crest dam with a gated dam at Braddock Locks and Dam 2, remove Locks and Dam 3 in Elizabeth and construct two larger locks at Charleroi Locks and Dam 4 in Belle Vernon. The Braddock, Elizabeth and Charleroi locks are the three oldest operating-navigation facilities on the Monongahela River and experience the highest commercial-traffic volume in the entire Monongahela River Navigation System.

Preparations are underway to install the second of two Tail Service Mast Umbilicals on the 0-level deck of the mobile launcher on July 27, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The 35-foot-tall umbilical will connect to NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket core stage aft section and provide liquid hydrogen and electrical cable connections to the core stage engine section to support propellant handling during prelaunch operations. The installation brings Exploration Ground Systems one step closer to supporting prelaunch operations for the agency's SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft on Exploration Mission-1 and deep space destinations.

At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, cement is poured as part of a construction project to upgrade the turn basin wharf. The work includes driving multiple precast concrete piles to a depth of about 70 feet to accommodate arrival of the core stage for the agency's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. When the stage for NASA's SLS departs the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, it will be shipped by the agency's modified barge to the Launch Complex 39 turn basin.

Construction workers with JP Donovan install the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage Umbilical (ICPSU) at about the 240-foot-level of the mobile launcher (ML) tower at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The last of the large umbilicals to be installed, the ICPSU will provide super-cooled hydrogen and liquid oxygen to the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket's interim cryogenic propulsion stage, or upper stage, at T-0 for Exploration Mission-1. The umbilical is located at about the 240-foot-level of the mobile launcher and will supply fuel, oxidizer, gaseous helium, hazardous gas leak detection, electrical commodities and environment control systems to the upper stage of the SLS rocket during launch. Exploration Ground Systems is overseeing installation of the umbilicals on the ML.
