Sketchbook John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). Sketchbook, 1871-1872. Graphite, charcoal, watercolor and white chalk on paper, Sketchbook: 9 3/16 x 11 7/8 x 1/2 in. (23.3 x 30.2 x 1.3 cm). Regarded as one of the leading portraitists and watercolorists of the Gilded Age, the expatriate John Singer Sargent was also a consummate draftsman. He drew prolifically and precociously from a young age, as evidenced by this sketchbook, which he used while traveling in Germany in 1871-72, at age fifteen. Sargent filled many of the pages with his exercises in copying classical statuary from the famous plaster cast collection of Dresdens Albertinum museum. Pennsylvania Station Excavation George Wesley Bellows (American, 1882-1925). Pennsylvania Station Excavation, ca. 1907-1908. Oil on canvas, 31 3/16 x 38 1/4 in. (79.2 x 97.1 cm). Between 1907 and 1909, George Wesley Bellows completed a series of four canvases devoted to the excavation of Pennsylvania Station in midtown Manhattan. In this version, laborers are dwarfed by the gaping pit they have created as they tear down the old New York in order to build it anew. The dark palette and vigorous brushwork, coupled with the chill winter atmosphere and billowing plumes of steam and smoke, lend additional drama to the scene. The painting has an infernal quality, suggesting the artists ambivalence about the rapid transformation of New York in the early twentieth century. The Gulf Stream 1899 United States. Homerís exploration of life and death in the tropics found ultimate expression in his oil painting The Gulf Stream painted at Proutís Neck following his return from the Bahamas. A group of four watercolors documents the evolution of this terrifying seascape, which details the plight of a solitary black man, adrift in stormy seas on a broken boat and encircled by a school of aggressive requiem sharks. In early 1885, on his first trip to the Bahamas, Homer had painted Shark Fishing which depicts two fishermen controlling a hooked shark that struggles, mouth open, in the immediate foreground. On this same trip, the artist executed a similar subject, Sharks (The Derelict). In this work, an unmanned wooden boat, broken-masted and taking on water, is under attack by at least three large, circling animals. The Temptation of Saint Anthony ca. 1550-60 Workshop of Herri met de Bles Netherlandish Herri met de Bles, of whose life little is known, was one of the most important Flemish landscape painters after Joachim Patinir. This fine panel (better preserved at the left than at the right) is characteristic of a number of his works that feature catastrophic, fantastic landscapes. Also, Hieronymus Boschs Lisbon Triptych of the Temptation of Saint Anthony functioned as a source for the panels Christian iconography and compositional elements. The artist cleverly conflated the style and motifs of Bles and Bosch to satisfy a local and foreign art market demand for small-scale and easily transportable paintings..
